My 18 year old brother stopped going to school and his addiction is getting worse n worse. He's beening using at least a year and my family has tried and tried to get him help. About 2 weeks ago he was kicked out because he would go over every inch of the house looking for something to steal. Things were constantly missing. I have a ps3 with no controllers or games lol. We didn't kick him out for the longest time because we were afraid it would just get worse, but after him taking out loans, stealing and writing bad checks, etc. We finally had no choice too. We constantly are telling him still he's allowed back in as soon as he passes a piss test, or agrees to an inpatient rehab. Still he refuses...anyone have any suggestions?

you can't make someone stop until they're ready to. it sucks, but thats just the way it is. i can tell you from experience with me (i'm 19) and my older brother (27)

unfortunately it takes the "bottom" for someone to make an attempt to get help....i had to wake up in a hospital bed friday night without knowing what happened after 5pm thursday night....i hope it doesn't take such a drastic occurence for your bro....he's runnin wild, but there will be somehting to slow him down soon enough.....he's gotta be somewhere else and completely away from what it is he knows so well these days

i was in the same situation your brother is in over this past summer. it finally took being homeless for 2 weeks and getting shot at over some stupid shit. i agreed to go to rehab for 30 days, completed it, got out, and went right back. now im on sub and doing a lot better. everyone hits their own bottom, some are worse than others. its all up too him. i would try talking too him about one of the opiate maintenance programs. theyve helped many addicts live normal lives.

Hopefully he can straighten out. I'm hoping the same thing for my younger brother, he is addicted to marijuana and going nowhere fast.

Be prepared for him to relapse, help him stay away from triggers. When he gets out of rehab, you need to make sure he doesn't have too much free time. He needs to get a job so he isn't sitting around thinking about using.

Basically, when you come out of a heavy addiction, you need to learn to be functional again.
