I think I’ve heard of both done by university researchers and pharmaceutical companies using genetic engineering. How long until these leak out and get used by illegal drug manufacturers? Will they? If these organisms were leaked to the public would it even be a viable route? Curious if anyone knows or has any interest in knowing like me. : )

Ever seen photos of the old Sandoz ergot farms? I wonder how they compare in safety and efficiency.

Sandoz switched to liquid culture long ago and used mutagens like UV sterilizing lamps and sodium nitrite to induce mutations to selectively hand select the high yielders.
This was pre-GMO. They'd apply mutagen, like UV light, until 90% of the spores were dead then selected for high yielders and rapid growers among the survivers.
