Xanax Tolerance Question

Ok, hypothetically speaking lets say I've been on .5mg xanax 2 times a day for 5 months now to treat acute anxiety/panic attacks that I dont really have. Because of this, I'm just stockpiling the pills and taking them for fun and comedowns. My question is, how long would it take for that dose of xanax to not work as well as it used to for what is is perscribed fo because of tolerance. I got a doc appt comming up and I dont want to say 'these dont work as well as when i got them' if I shouldnt have a tolerance by now. Thanks!

Acutally, patients often build a tollerance to the side-effects, but not the anti-anxiety effects. But for those that do build a tollerance, 5 months should be long enough. Of course, if you are on it for "acute anxiety" and it's been 5 months since whatever event happened that caused "acute anxiety" and you say the pills don't work, your doc might suggest a different course of treatment, with effexor or buspar or celexa.
 
well ya seem to have a good DOC cause most docs would just give scripts of ssri's and send you on yer way.
you should say:"i find that one doesnt seem to help as good anymore,so is it safe/ok to take 2,i didnt want to go ahead and do this until i talked to you about it first"
...i dont know much but sounds like a good line to say
 
Well, he did give me a script for an ssri too, i just dont take that crap at all. Then I started 'having' panic attacks, which is what got the xanax scripted. The 'anxiety causing event' is still going on so i think i'm good for a couple months more refills anyway.
