I've been researching everywhere and can't find a straight answer. How long does it take for you to be physically addicted to Xanax/Benzos? I've heard anywhere from a week to 4 months. I'm taking 2mg to 4mg a day. Its been a week. i do not want to get addicted to them, i've been to rehab and seen the withdrawls... no thank you.

Hopefully someone knows!

You've heard a week to 4 months because it is different for everybody :P Nobody can give you a concrete answer on what will happen to you, I'm afraid.

My advice would be to stop now!! It is only going to get more likely the longer you continue. Good luck.

^^ Exactly. I can honestly say I was hooked on xanax from day one psychologically, probably several weeks physically. If you don't want to go through withdrawals then you can't dose daily. If you dose daily you will end up on the tolerance-dependence-addiction train. From a person who's been there with Benzo addiction, withdrawals, seizures... If you want to not get withdrawals stop now, or at least stop daily usage. 2mg a day too quickly goes to 4, to 6, to 8 untill you're where I was taking 30mg a day just to be "normal".

Benzo's are harder to kick than basically anything, I preferred my opiate addiction to my Benzo one.

I've been to rehab and was one of those people that I imagine you saw in a lot of agony coming off benzo's. If you are worried, switch to diazepam or clonazepam and taper down now.

Any long term daily use of Xanax is not beneficial.

About two to three weeks of daily dosing will cause withdrawal/ rebound symptoms upon discontinuation for a certain percentage of people. Shorter spans of daily use can cause it in a smaller percentage of people, or commonly in "as needed" users. At eight weeks, roughly 35% of first time users experienced rebound symptoms, though I believe that more than this likely did experience some symptoms, yet may have had difficulty pinpointing them.

So another question along these lines... what if i take 2mg every day for a week, don't take any for a week, then 2mg every day for the next week, etc.
Will I get any withdrawl symptoms? I really am not worried about the minor psychological symptoms, I know how to handle those. I'm talking about hardcore benzo withdrawl.

A scary side story -- a good friend of mine who was a heroin and benzo addict recently went through xanax WD. he was taking 20-30 a day, and stopped taking them. He was still doing H so he couldn't figure out why he didn't feel well, since he knew he wasn't detoxing (he didn't think about the bars). He went to the hospital on the second day and had a series of several seizures. The seizures damaged his brain and he has lost a significant portion of his memory, from childhood all the way up to going to the hospital. He only remembers flashes and glimpses. And its not coming back much, at all.

So yeah basically i'm trying to avoid that.

Benzos are responsible for a shocking number of ER visits in the last few years.
Many people end up with severe panic attacks, often resembling heart-attacks.
Some have seizures.

In my experience only a FEW DAYS on benzos is enough to cause emotional problems.
For my wife, a SINGLE dose pretty much guarantees a problem the next day.
Long-term cannabis use may be a major factor.

I would expect you to have some rebound effects if you stop now.
You should try and see, that way you can answer your own question.
What you may not expect is how insidious the withdrawal is.

It comes from SO deep inside you that you won't even understand what has happened until it is over!
While it is going on, it will feel like a completely natural thought process with justifiable anger.
Only after it peaks and wears off will you recognize the chemical imbalance that occurred.

Benzos increase GABA, which suppresses glutamate.
This causes glutamate to compensate.
When benzos are withdrawn, the brain finds itself with TOXIC levels of glutamate, an excitatory neurotransmitter.
At high levels it can kill neurons.

The seizure is a defense mechanism by the brain, which releases nerve growth factors.
These proteins allow neurons to survive otherwise lethal conditions.
But they may allow for the re-wiring of circuits critical to memory.
Short and long-term memory impairment is seen with ECT, but is rare.
The seizures are controlled and last around two minutes - your friend may have seized for much longer.

Tell him that with ECT induced seizures and memory loss, there is sometimes substantial recovery.
Typically it takes only a few days or weeks, but some patients continue to regain memories over a period of months or even years!

He should have been given a benzo at the hospital to prevent seizure.
Benzos HAVE to be tapered, esp. when the daily intake is retarded.
He needs to exercise daily, as this improves brain recovery in a very substantial way.

Even though you are not taking stupid amounts, you should EXPECT problems soon.
You won't have seizures, but you may be quite surprised just how PISSED off and CRAZY you become.
And you won't know it until you stop taking it.
