Xanax for withdrawals

I ve read in many posts about other drugs that help make the withdrawal symptoms easier. One that is mentioned alot is xanax or other benzos. I was wondering what role xanax and other benzos play on the withdrawal symptoms. What does it exactly do to help the withdrawal?

Anxiety and Insomnia are two of the biggest withdrawl symptoms (if you are referring to opiate withdrawl) and xanax can help with both of those, although not as much with the Insomnia. I really helps with the creepy crawly skin feeling.

You dont mention withdrawals from what ?... But be carful im on opioid too and and was for a LONG time a benzo user, I can tell you withdrawals from benzo is one of the most horrible.

Feeling sick as hell, can't sleep, can't work properly... some physical symptoms the first few days...

just be carful to not get hoocked on benzo. gl for your whatever drugs withdrawals!

I always use benzos for withdraws and come downs, they make all the bad parts of doing drugs easier to get through. After I went on a Oxycodone binge I used my prescribed ativan for the withdraws and come downs. it helped a lot.

I was talking about opiate withdrawal and was also wondering if the xanax or any benzo of your choice helped in anyway with controlling that awful urge to take more opiates.. thanks for the responses so far.

During opiate withdrawal benzos are fucking KEY to have on hand. Now you don't want to take them for more than a week, maybe, to help you get through the worst of the physical part. You don't want to end up addicted to them, after detoxing from opiates.

Personally I prefer Valium or Klonopin during withdrawals, due to their long half life. Valium also has excellent muscle relaxing properties, and help immensely with the restless legs, muscle tension, anxiety, and especially insomnia.

Xanax is more powerful, but it lacks the muscle relaxation and isn't very good for sleep, due to its short half life. It IS good to have around though, for breakthrough anxiety. If you take a high enough dose though you will probably pass out and in my opinoin xanax is the benzo that will get you the most 'fucked up' feeling, which certainly will take your mind off of the withdrawal.

The best way to do it in my experience would be kpin/valium high dose in the am, high dose in the pm, as well as having xanax on hand and maybe taking a couple mg mid day, and some right before sleep combined with the valium. Temazepam/restoril is also a good choice for the night time, it helps with sleep greatly.

Unfortunately benzos don't help with the hot/cold flashes, sweating, stomach, pain, etc. So if you have a good supply of benzos, also invest in some loperamide (immodium) for the shits, and a decent dose of lope will also help reduce most withdrawal symptoms since it is an opiod, but it barely crosses the BBB so there isn't my recreational potential. But a high dose certainly helps reduce many symptoms. Ibuprofen is also very helpful for muscle/joint/bone pain.

Note: Benzos are addicting (obviously), so only use them for the first few days of withdrawal, to help get through the worst of it. Taking high doses to sedate/knock yourself out for a few days is fine, but you don't want to develop a dependence to benzos. benzo withdrawal is worse than opiate withdrawal in my opinion, it is horrirble

Very popular but you will be fucking around with a drug that addicts quicker and has much worse IME WD's than opiates. If you can get more opiates then start yourself on a steady taper dose at regular intervals. Tapering is the best way to go to ease WD's and get off.

I used low doses almost everyday of various benzos for about 4 months and got horribly fucked. I'm sensitive to them though.

I have heard that xanax used to detox from severe opiate addiction (which is about 90% OF ALL OPIATE ADDICTIONS - have REAL opiate addiction that they have been on for awhile) can be helpful but when in severe opiate withdrawals that even if you take big doses of xanax, like 4mg - 10mgs of XANAX when in the 1st stages of severe opiate detox still will have little effect on how you feel. Unless of course you are popping extreme doses of xanax like 10mgs + and alcohol to potentate the xanax.... My friend told me when he was detoxing from Heroin (mainly) & Oxycodone that even when he took 3 to 5 bars of Xanax that he was still feeling like shit... is this true? because I only got 3mgs of Suboxone left and then I am shit outta luck.... Luckly I just got 8 xanax bars (2mgs each) in a desperate hope to help me with these severe withdrawals i am about to encounter. These withdrawals will be ONLY suboxone withdrawals, but i have been hearing a lot about how Suboxone withdrawals are just as bad and last a long time sorta like methadone...? Any other recommindations on what other drugs/supplements I should get to make it a successful detox?

The top 3 meds used for opioid withdrawals are loperamide, benzodiazepines, and clonidine. Check out the withdrawal threads for more details (read the ones about withdrawing from heroin and from methadone too, the tips, supplements, etc are all useful, just with methadone or Suboxone are going to have a lot longer withdrawals). With the benzos you are going to want to not take them daily for very long and gradually taper off of them, so that you don't just end up getting physically dependent on them.

HerbalJah - I woud seriously recommend getting your doctor to help you come up with a plan to taper off the Subs and some meds and supplements to help. Are you quitting a high dose of Suboxone cold-turkey, and if so why?

^ I second seeing a doctor for detox - hopefully you can be put on an appropriate dose of a benzo or other meds, plus advice with vitamins and exercise (where possible!). Benzos will help, there's no doubt about it. Though as BrokendownPalace said very well, benzos IMO are one hell of an evil to come off once dependent... so be careful and safe :)
