Hi all, used the search engine, found some helpful information, but none of it really pertained EXACTLY to my situation. If this is more suitable for a basic drug discussion forum, feel free to move it there, and I apologize ahead for the inconvenience.

For almost a month now I've been taking 2 mg of xanax every day straight. I already feel a tolerance building, and have urges to up my dosage to 3 mg, but don't due to the fact that I'm buying them illegally and I'm in a poor financial situation. I'm not sure if I've got a physical addiction to xanax, because there really hasn't been a day in the last 30 days where I havn't been on it. I always wake up and take one mg, and then throughout the rest of the day, I either take .5 mg 2x's or now that I feel a tolerance building, I take another 1 mg about 6-7 hours after my last dose.

With the usage dosage described above, is there a chance that I might suffer physical withdrawals if I stop abruptly? For those of you who have dealt with benzo addiction before, how long did you notice it to take to become physically addicted, and what dosages were you taking?

Benzo addiction/tolerance can develope VERY quickly and I highly recommend you be very careful when discontinuing your xanax use, as you may allready have a dependancy on alprazolam that could result in seizures. It is hard to tell exactly what kind of situation you are in because everyone responds differently and you may be able to take 2 mg's/day of xanax for a month and quit cold turkey no problem....im like that, as long as im not taking more than 3 mg's a day of xanax I can quit taking it anytime, but some people cant, and its not something you should risk. Slowly taper your xanax use down if you ever plan on being benzo free.

If you have to ask these types of questions you know somewhere in your mind it's getting out of control and your looking for any excuse to rationalize use from other replies.

Please please stop or actually titrate yourself down. Your already in a bad place not fully addicted and have funds as an issue. Imagine a monster tolerance and no funds you will steal or anything to support your habit. At some point your world will crash around you and you will have to no if ands or buts about face horrid withdrawals.

It's as if you buy a yacht and you ask if gas is expensive for it... If you have to ask you can't afford it. If your asking about tolerance, addiction, withdrawals it's upon you.

Please be safe and find yourself off this substance.

I was prescribed 3mg a day for a month for some bad anxiety. I took it til I had things straightened out, almost the full month. I stopped with no problem, no withdrawal.

Im the same way as you^^^......were lucky.

unfortunately not everybody is so lucky. So its important to always be careful when taking benzodiazepines.

thanks for the response. In response to hydro, I appreciate your concern, but I'm actually not really even bothering rationalizing my use. I've messed with benzo's for years, but never for such a consistant ammount of time in a row. I've been on and off opioids and cocaine for almost five years now, so it's pretty easy for me to know when I'm making excuses.

I thank everyone for the responses. I just wanted to know what precautions I should look out for should I be in a situation where benzo's weren't available, or if I just wanted to plain stop at this point in time or some time soon.

for those of you who have experienced withdrawal from short acting benzo's, how long do you find your dosages last, and what are the begining signs of w/d? I hear its worse than being dope sick, which I can't comprehend, but is it a similair feeling of cold sweats and nausea/cramps and the like, or is it more like extreme panic attacks and shaking, or a combo of the two? I know you can get seizures if your really unfortunate.

What makes benzo withdrawal worse than opiate withdrawal isnt necessarily the pain it causes you to go through, as much as it is the dangerousness of the withdrawal you are experiencing. Opiate withdrawal is just extremely painful, not dangerous...while benzo withdrawal can cause deadly seizures.

Allthough, some people do claim that there benzo withdrawal experience was more painful than there opiate withdrawal experience.....this I find hard to believe given all the pain I have endured during my heroin addiction, but everyone is different and I cant speak for other people, so maybe it CAN be more painful than opiate withdrawals.

i am addicted to both opiates and xanax, if I had to quit one it would be opiates, if i ever quit xanax im sure id have an neverending panic attacked resulting in a seizure and sudden death, if i lose place of my bottle for 5 minutes im ready to kill.

no doubt benzo withdrawal can be hell for some and even dangerous but also try not to let some of the horror stories put you offf trying to give up.

i stopped dead after 10 months chronic abuse (once weekly,100-300 pills) and then 1 month of a 30 a day habit.

i suffered a few weeks insomnia, derealisation and some very strange muscle flinches/twitches.

but after a couple of months i was fine and my tolerance had even suprisingly dropped somewhat,to the point where benzos work for me in a therapeutic way.

im addicted to benzos and opiates and if i was forced to pick just one either klonopin or suboxone (my benzo and opiate) i don't even know what i would do honestly, i've been through benzo and opiate w/d's and i wouldn't want either one, but opiate w/d's are easier to go through IMO.. but still i need both honestly im bipolar and that gives me bad anxiety that's what the k-pins are for and suboxone is to keep me clean off opiates (duh lol) and if i was to quit that i would have a full blown addiction again within 2 weeks guaranteed. but enough about me, on to you..

I would just take .5mg/day starting now for 2 weeks and then jump off. the .5 will keep you from seizing up if you were going to and jumping off at .5mg shouldn't be too hard for you to do, but personally i think you could cold turkey it right now and face minimal w/d..
do as you feel is right for YOU no one can tell how you feel besides yourself, try to CT and if you get w/d's then take the .5 for 2 weeks and then stop. That's if you want to, but the longer you are using the drug the deeper the hole you're digging for yourself to climb out. and if you keep digging you WILL hit rock bottom.

Good luck! keep us posted %)
