I have heard some dubstep (Katy B) but it just sounds like club music to me. Is there something I am not hearing with this stuff? Can anyone direct me to a band that is the apotheosis of dubstep?

it's the disgusting mutation of a wonderful genre of music called Dub. Lil reggae soundclips mixed and mashed into chill, deep, basic, almost psychadelic form of reggae.
Then came dubstep (whatever the fuck that is), and the idea that anyone with a fancy computer and bass is automatically a DJ...

Too many people think they know what Dubstep is, when all their hearing is mainstream filth.

When I think of real dubstep, I think of Skream.

OK in some of the Skream I could hear the wobble e.g. Dubbers Anonymous

The wobble is not what makes Dubstep, dubstep. It's the beats, the basslines and the spacey kind of sounds. You gotta have a good subwoofer too, because most of the sound is coming from the lower end, and if you don't have a subwoofer you're literally not hearing half the music.

It is simply, Transformers having sex , the noise it makes...
hahah

na well, dubstep is very interesting on dissociatives

Personally I have no idea what the relationship between dub and dubstep is, other than by name.

IMO, dubstep is basically DnB at half tempo.

deep, reverberating bass (aka 'wobble')
samples of vocals that can be repeated (ie: haunting)
makes you want to melt into the ground beneath your feet
progressive, some may say repetitive, but in a relative way that trance is progressive and emotional
deep
dirty
grungy
dark
sexy
slightly reminiscent of dub/reggae

there is good dubstep and there is bad dubstep like any other genre of music. you just gotta listen to more and more and more and more to figure out where that fine line is for you :D :P

Dub step was what happened when some dj's in the UK startetd mixing two-step records with dub techniques. (add more bass echos and other dub techniques)

Also, from a musician's point of view, I might add that dubstep often includes weird time signatures or poly-rhythms which are very far from traditional 4/4 or 6/8 strait feels. This is thanks to computers because I cannot imagine human beings playing or counting many dubstep songs.
