Writing Challenge: write a sixty second poem (or prose)

Cosmic Mist said:
You know you never know,
and when you think you know you don't,
but when you don't you become just that much closer to it.

And in knowing, you become distant,
and in your distance you grow cold,
chills covering your body and strangling your heart.

Maybe it's best not to know...

Let the confusion begin.
awesome!

I really liked that cm, I like the layering.. :)

unpopular.

how many people need to tell you
how loved you are before you'll believe it?
maybe it would be easier
if someone would hold you at night
when you're not making the world laugh.
maybe it would be easier
if you weren't still a child
underneath your skin.

...The thing I find about doing this is that 60 seconds is just long enough to rattle off some thoughts and get enough momentum going to want to carry it further...it's difficult to write something with a proper beginning, middle and end.. :)

^ mmmm

though that one was good!!!

i think you managed to begin, middle and end it well - it felt complete. a nice succinct snapshot. :)

60 seconds, he reckons
is all it will take
to put into words
How you think your heart breaks...

(not mine)

The confusion and infusion
as to my disillusion
are a frequent intrusion
to the running of my mind
A speedy solution
is what I must find

Absolution
from all of mankind.

This is a very cool idea, so thought I'd bump it up. Haven't read all of the thread (I'll get to that), but from what I have read, there are some mad and mysterious seeds and starts.

Here's my first attempt:

Haven

’t felt like this for a while –
unready unwilling,
cold-frozen and limp.

It’s a shame, or is it?

I look back and I see
what I’m unsure of (many things),
but not this.

This is what I have to be sure of,
isn’t it?

This is right, right here.

Asemic Writing:
It looks like writing, but we can't quite read it.

I call works like this "asemic writing".

Asemic writing seems to be a gigantic, unexplored territory.

Asemic writing has been made by poets, writers, painters, calligraphers, children, and scribblers, all around the world. Most people make asemic writing at some time, possibly when testing a new pen.

Educators talk about children going through distinct stages of "mock letters", "pseudowriting" and so on, as they're learning to write. Please show us more examplesof this on the www! Isn't a child's early writing the very fountainhead of human writing culture, or its growing tip?

Asemic writing does something to us. Some asemic writing has pictograms or ideograms, which suggest a meaning through their shape. Others take us for a ride along their curves. We like some, we dislike others.

They tend to have no fixed meaning. Their meaning is open. Every viewer can arrive at a personal, absolutely correct interpretation.

Asemic writing has been presented in books, in paintings, on scrolls, on single pages, on mailed envelopes, on walls, in cinema, on television and on computer monitors, particularly via the internet.

I know it's not exactly the same, but the idea is that you tap into your consciousness, and instead of using it to think about what you will write, you just think about continuously writing. It can be very interesting for having conversations with yourself :) An old one I did (most of the time when I use this method it becomes way too personal)

So today i went
and walked away
i had to say
it filled me with dismay
and now I'm gone
but not for long
I hope I know
just where to go
but alas
i don't
and i fear
i wont
for the longest of times
i'll continue my rhymes
they're meaningles
purposeless
helpess
and demeaning
they lack meaning
they lack thought
they lack all i was taught
so what do i do
i don't know
do you?
there's gotta be something left
within my breath
within the things i see to be
as they should
i dunno
where to go
with what i say
or how i play
so what is wrong
this aint a song
its a rant
it mean nothing
it's insignificant
its just a rant
to analyse
my disguise
and see though myself
its good for my health
i wonder where this is all going
left not knowing
i fear it has some meaning
thats demeaning
i gotta stop rhyming stupid words
but i lack the verbs
i guess i'm with the nerds
stop
sing
dancing
playing
gaming
keeping this going
without really knowing
just where i'll end up
well, thats life
right?

(and yeah it would have been less than 60 seconds :) )

^ Wow, that was less than 60 seconds? There's a lot of it! ;)

In terms of what's going on in this thread, I would call it 'automatic' writing (after Andre Breton and the Surrealists).

Thanks heaps for the related reading! Appears to me that asemic (which could be defined as 'meaningless') writing is automatic writing which further breaks down linguistic conventions, so that conventional forms of words / letters / alphabets themselves are no longer adhered to, or important. I hadn't come across this before! Klee, Kandinsky and Miro were into it, too! :D

you can do alot in 60's once you tap into your mind... asemic writing might be considered different, as it is done without any intention of recording.... but I feel they are both taping into the same resource and that's whats important. The last bit might have been slightly more than 60 seconds, tho I doubt it... I've been practising this shit for a little while now, and once you've got it down it's an awesome way to record your thoughts straight outta your brain.
----------------------
What the fuck happened yesterday
I don't know
I think I'm going insane,
part of me said
"HE FUCKING KNOWS!"
another part
"HE KNOWS NOTHING!"
and the final part
"she's doing it on purpose... somehow luck is on my side"
And so I am left wondering which place I am at
Am I in hell
am I in heaven
Am I dying without knowing that my brain is imploding
What the fuck is going on
Is the world flipping
or is it just me
Am I really this lost
or is everything making complete sense
and I'm just too scared to admit it's possibilities
It's been about 45 seconds now
I wonder if I'll figure this shit out before the minute mark
almost there
sooooo close
that's how it feels anyway
but instead my fear leaves me thinking
WTF is going on!?!?!?!

Breaking the silence in his head, Steve awakened from his daydream.
"Or maybe," he thought, "I'm still dreaming". It wasn't the first time that he had wandered off in English class.
Reality seemed to be sinking away, as surreal feelings bubbled to the top. Didn't this happen yesterday?
Even at 18, he has trouble sticking to a common goal
Doing nothing becomes a habit that eventually grows; wasting time- a hobby. Boredom sinks in and Steve remebers nothing.

not sure if it's up to par or not.
w/e :)

there is no par... this thread, more even, these writings, can only be judged by yourself. That's kind of the whole point, and why this type of writing should generally be reserved for the times where you don't plan on sharing. Once you start thinking that you are sharing what you are writing, you destroy the whole 'writing without thinking' part...

hence why most of my attempts are reserved for myself only... though it's changing... I'm almost completely free =D

A similar thread i started:

http://www.bluelight.ru/vb/showthread.php?t=212797

there's a few in there.

Cool, just had a look. Similar idea, shame no one else took you up on it at the time. I like the fact that this thread places a 60-second limit though. Don’t know about you, but I think reading other people’s stream of consciousness is best done in small doses… unless they’re Jack Kerouac or James Joyce! ;) Although with Joyce at least (and arguably Kerouac as well), there was plenty of revision and rewriting involved.

Agreed!

Yeah, and I think it’s also a great way to get starting points for creative work, whether for poetry, fiction, painting, design, or whatever. There might just be one line, or one idea that startles you, because you’re not sure where it’s come from – and this can be the starting point for something major.

Good for you… and I totally agree that this thread isn’t about judgement or evaluation. I don’t think we should judge our own 60-second pieces as works of art or anything. However, it can be interesting to examine them and think about what we’re really saying (or trying to say). Where are these words coming from? ;)

Anyway, here’s another one for today:

you’re worried you might hurt,
your tears, your red, your pink,
your hair wet from the shower,
your body heat and

my hands cold on you, your shudder

I have to go, your tears
follow me out

Things are back,
things happy,
smiles

disappeared for at least a week
but he was back today
standing hollering
toothlessly.

He'd been sick,
figured he's nearly through it -
tell him I hope
things are back soon,
back and clear and toothsome.

this is a great thread, here are my two attempts.

We're there,
in the distance we imagined,

All smiles end
in turning away
from happiness.

No more turning

we're here
and ready to stay.
