On the streets a child
thin beneath grey rags
looks askance at me
in my button down oxford
I browse the paper
the world in black and white
how simple it all seems

then I see the child
again glaring
in his smug poverty
he knows the truth
that the leaders all
the world round
have such little hold
on the mass

the great multitude
who's to stop the future?
not a law passed in Brussels
not a budget ratified in Washington
home of the brave
where are they now?

six billion people
a new era
it's all up in the air now
up in coal smoke
chinese factories and arab oil wells

those park avenue patriarchs
and their pearl bedecked wives
blind drunk at another cocktail party
don't see what's coming
they can't even
imagine
how bleak the modern world
could be

now I take a step
the open street beckons
bright lights and yellow taxi cabs
quick and hopeful and
in the moment
I grasp for it
can't touch it
but I can hope
can't I?

We can all hope against the weather of the world. What we can do is another matter altogether.

Certainly. One can always have hope.
Nice piece, these thoughts are on my mind also.
