EDIT: my friend bought a urine test from the pharmacy and it DID give a false positive for methamphetamine. JUST SO YOU KNOW...

The way it works here is you come up to a checkpoint, they put a swab in your mouth - if it tests positive you're taken into the van, given a second swab, possibly a blood test - and that is sent to the lab for analysis. You're then banned from driving for 3-6hrs or something.

and then what? do they let you back out on the road, seems like there would have to be more repercussions than that...

I actually have some experience. Took MPA and MDAI. One caused a false amphetamine on a dip test.

I'm on sertraline (Zoloft, 200mg daily), mirtazapine (Remeron, 30mg nightly) and take copious amounts of loperamide (Imodium, 200mg daily) and I show on the WA state Dept. of Corrections random drug test as positive for benzodiazepines. Not really related, but they had to send it into the lab each time and the lab test came back negative for benzos, my point being that those tests aren't the most cut & dry.
