Woman charged with injecting heroin while pregnant

HAMPSTEAD, N.H. -- Police are charging a 22-year-old Hampstead woman with endangering the life of her unborn child for allegedly injecting heroin while 20 weeks pregnant.

If convicted, Nina Doane faces up to a year in jail with court-ordered counseling and up to a $2,000 fine.

Albert Frost, 28, who lives at the same address, is charged with the same crime for allegedly injecting Doane.

Police are not releasing any details.

County Attorney James Reams says the case could be a first for Rockingham County. Reams said similar prosecutions are becoming more common around the country.

What she did was wrong, but it's kinda scary if they could charge her for that. Like you said, what else can they charge you for?

Can they charge a pregnant women if she has a few drinks? If she smokes?

Meh, I guess not cause those aren't illegal substances...

What I find most disturbing here is the law's answer to everything is locking people up in jail. Brilliant. Presumably, they are trying to look out for the best interests of the baby by condemning her shooting up while pregnant. How is locking the baby's mother away looking out for it's best interests? If anything, she needs help. What a fucked up way of going about this...

has any baby ever even died from injecting herion into the mother?

Not that I agree with the story but my nans godson's kid was born a heroin addict due to the mother being a eavy abuser of heroin among other heavy drugs, which is kid of sad. But i know 2 people whom while were pregnant would still carry on sniffing huge amounts of cocaine while they had children in the whom, 1 of them was hospitalised due to this and there was no mention of charges or such as a danger to the babys life yet the woman injecting heroin wasnt doing it because she was just having a drink and a few lines of coke, but because more than likely she needed to.

When heroin abuse becomes so far it isnt a drug anymore, its an illness and the only way to rid the illness even if its oly for a short time is to take more of the poison.

The fact is there people smoke, drink and take other drugs which in there eyes are not as damaging to the baby growing inside them, when really they do not need to which is unlike a heroin addict whom most people could say feel and crave the need to take their poison, and 99% of the time it isnt because they want to, its because they need to.

Most heroin addicts are victims in my eyes.

Stories like this scare the shit out of me! I find it incredible that women can be charged for potentially damaging a fetus. I wonder how this came to the cops' attention ... did some pissy neighbor report them? Could I just rat on the next preggo I see tossing back espressos or sipping on a beer? This is ridiculous.
same, i think its astounding because it essentially says the state is defining where life begins, while in this case to add on to the potential lists of charges for drug users, it could establish a precedent for something much worse.

No, you can be arrested for any of those sorts of things. If the mother has decided to keep the baby, then it might as well be considered harming something that is going to become a human, even if it's not necessarily a person yet.

I remember when I was baker acted, there was a woman there who had been doing meth while pregnant - and two of her other kids were born while she had been doing meth pregnant with them as well.

She needed to be locked up and frankly, I don't feel that bad for this mother, either.
