Wisdom Teeth - Aussie Version!

For me the cost of dental work is all just relative when you consider the risks of not paying for it

When I had the procedure done I was told that the biggest risk is the removal of the top two as there is a chance that the extraction could create a hole that links up your sinus cavity with the roof of yr mouth.

Definitely, there are horror stories out there but it's still rare! The only thing I was a little apprehensive about was the anaesthesia, but lucky I know quite a few people in the medical field (one specifically is an anaesthetist) so a quick word with him calmed me!

Honestly, for all involved (anaesthetist, nurses, oral surgeon, etc.) it's a very routine operation! They would have done it many, many times! :D

As others have said, in the best case; you've got some dull (and/or sharp) pain ya can ignore with pain killers. Worst case; pictures above, deep infection/septicaemia/blah blah. Get it done! :)

I would have spent 10 grand+ this year alone on my teeth! >_< Not cos I have poor oral hygiene but received braces (expensive Ortho), multiple times (normal/regular for one with braces) checkups to the dentist/hygienist, wisdom teeth extraction (all 4, 2 impacted giving me hell!) and all with no private health. Will be worth it though! :D

First of all, I think everyone should have private health cover. Firstly you can get your teeth cleaned twice per year for nix, and secondly if you do have to have things like teeth removed then it is heaps cheaper. Thirdly, and off topic...if you are blind as a bat (like me), you get free contact lenses and glasses if you want them so the annual fee in essence is negated. Last financial year I got way more back then I spent. Mainly due to my wisdoms coming out of course but the regular teeth cleans and contact lense supplies always even it out. Of course you have the hospital cover too if anything bad eventuates.

Anyway, the point of this thread was to try to take away the nerves that people often have about having their wisdom teeth removed. I can't stress enough that it was a walk in the park and actually enjoyable due to the gas. My dentist was great (happy to refer in PM). He made me bite down on a numbing gel first, then I started sucking on the gas before the injections. They didn't hurt at all. I was in a very relaxed state and was tripping out on the music. The worst bit was afterwards but even that was fine considering I had 4 teeth ripped out. If your dentist tells you you should do it, DO IT!
