Wine Tasting Thread

Any Australians know of any Barbera wines available here?
Im guessing I could maybe find an imported one but have never seen it grown locally.

Also, screw the Wine critics! everyones taste is different at the end of the day it's what taste good to you!

QFE!!!
So so true mate.
One of my pet peeves is people who think that their wine preference is superior over other's just because they drink whatever is fashionable at the moment, and "talk the talk".

Well, Chardonnay and Pinot Grigio are the "it" white wine varieties in Australia at the moment and I don't like either of them!
I'll stick to my Marlborough region Sauv Blancs thanks <3 :)

Well Im excited. Apparently my local Italian shop has three different Barbera's.

Im looking forward to trying one for the first time.

yAy! i'm gonna scrap the initial time lines for now. perhaps instead of us all trying to select and sample the same bottle, we can just all try the same variety and keep that on a schedule. so for now (and the next few weeks), all we'd be trying and discussing is Barberas- any label you can find. what do you guys think? does that sound more do-able? :)

That sounds doable. I just got me a bottle of Barbera d’Alba DOC – Poderi Colla, Alba - [2005]. Will report back when I have tasted. It was about $1 US above the price range, but Perth is an awfully long way from Italy so I will forgive them.

awesome! i ordered the one that i posted on the first page; i'm looking forward to trying it this week. i've been impressed with every barbera i've tried so far :)

Barbera d’Alba DOC – Poderi Colla, Alba - [2005]
Tried this over the weekend. I would give the bottle I had perhaps a 4/10

It didnt really have much of a smell about it. The flavour wasnt horrible but it wasnt anything to write home about either. It was however not too rough going down and went well with the roast meat we had. It had a bit of acidity about it and also some tanins.

Im not sure if 5 years is a bit too long to store this wine or if perhaps Barbera is not to my liking.

Any wine buffs out there able to tell me if staining on the inside of the cork is a sign of poor storage or exposure to high temperatures? The cork was about 1/3 purple. I dont often drink anything more than a 4 or 5 years old and havent noticed this before.

my bottle arrives tomorrow, so i'll have a review by the end of the weekend! :)

THIS THREAD = WIN

SUCH a good idea.

I'm so down!!

EDIT: erm... am i just really high or is there no wine of the week? is everyoen just drinkin their own stuff?

Please note- i just updated the original post!

so far only one person has reviewed a Barbera. That's still the current variety, so if you want to participate, just go out and buy one, and let us know what you think of it! this is for anyone, and you don't need to know elite wine review terms or anything. if you want to learn what the experts base their opinions on, read up and post some tips! if not, just talk down-to-earth and say what you did or didn't like about it. I haven't had a chance to open the one i bought yet, but am hoping to by the end of the week. but hopefully there will be some others trying some soon as well! :)

I've got a night out this weekend with professional wine drinking women & if I find any Barbera I'll put it to the test & publish my results that I can remember from the carnage :)

All in the name of research obviously ;)

^^ Perhaps you should take a notepad and pen in your pocket so that you can sporadically stumble off to the bathroom to write notes on the wines you taste, lest you forget what you've been drinking ;) =D

no, i'm pretty sure it only tells you that it was stored in a horizontal position, which is good.

so i tried the one i listed on page 1 last night, and i've gotta say i was disappointed. it's the first barbera that i didn't absolutely love. didn't even drink a whole glass. it was a little overpowering and acidic, and i have no idea how to properly review a wine but the ones i like i want to drink more, and this was just not really inviting. i always use a 5 star rating system in my journal, and this gets a 2.5. i've had worse, but i've also had much better. and like i said, this was the first of this variety that i haven't totally loved. kinda bummed me out!

ok, it'll be easy to just finish this weekend/month on barberas and start out March with Chardonnays! so any last minute drinkers- post a brief review :)

I have just opened this Australian Chardonnay. Xabregas Show Reserve 2007
It cost me 19$AU at my local and is pretty damn tasty as good as some Ive paid $30 for. It is oaked though so maybe not to every ones liking.

For me the oak adds a lot to Chardonnay. I don't usually drink whites so I'm not sure how I would rate it maybe 7/10. It smells nice and leaves a nice taste in your mouth afterwards, not too sweet or fruity but not too dry either. The tasting notes say it is like apricots and butter, I think that is a bit of a stretch of the imagination but I can see where they are coming from.

cool! ^

i don't usually buy whites either, but i'm looking forward to having this as an excuse to branch out some.
