Wimbledon 2008

Although Andy Murray is currently in the Tim Henman situation (ie a top 10 player but not really likely to get past the semi's at best) you've got to love his aggression.

Great to watch :D

As I came home tonight, the final words I heard on the radio as I got out of the car were

"So is it Gasquets brilliance that has won this match, or has Murray had a bad day"
"Gasquet's brilliance"

I have just seen that Murray won.

Let's hear it for the experts on Radio Five Live.

^ In their defence, it was all over by the end of the third set. Gasquet was completely outplaying him & "just" had to serve it out. Such is the magic of tennis though...;)

I knew Hewitt wasnt going to be able to get past Federer, however I must say that Federer was either a bit stiff or he just wasn't ready to let out his A game.

If he is holding back then I'd say that he will hold off Nadal otherwise it looks like the R-Fed Wimbledon streak will be broken this year

Yeah, Federer really wasn't playing that well yesterday, but he really stepped up on the points that counted. Lleyton had 8 break points from the end of the 2nd through to the middle of the 3rd sets, and Rog served brilliantly on all of them, on only 1 of them did Lleyton have a real chance, and he hit a very difficult volley just wide.

As the commentators said, if he was playing that badly against Nadal, he'd be gone. As Hewitt had a dicky hip, his movement was noticeably limited, especially out wide to the forehand in the 3rd set, and Rog being the consummate professional, readily took advantage of it.

Would have loved to see that match go longer. If Lleyton had been un-injured I reckon he could have taken Federer *if* he kept playing as averagely as he was through the match and didn't step it up as he usually does at critical points. But then, thats all academic, as lleyton was injured and Rog did step up when required.

Roger has a VERY interesting next 2 matches... firstly against Mario Ancic - the last player to beat him at Wimbledon (in the 1st round 6 years ago...) who is having a bit of a renaissance now that he isn't consistently injured, and then if Rog gets past Ancic, it's likely he'll face Marat Safin. Now THAT will be a cracker of a game, and Federer really won't be able to play sub-par tennis.

I'm tentatively suggesting a Safin - Nadal final, with Safin coming from nowhere to take it out. How good would THAT be!!

Hahaha not a chance! IIRC Hewitt has never beaten Federer and on grass?! He could be playing very poorly and I still think he'd take the little yapper.

Pinhole Star - I don't really follow tennis anymore. Why is he a horrible individual?

As for Nadal - well you could say it's all the channelled anger, etc or you can argue he was probably the first tennis player to properly introduce the cynical delaying tactics, toilet breaks, slow walks between points when not on serve etc in order to disrupt his opponent.

I hope Federer beats him in 5 in what must surely be the final. My gut instinct says Nadal in 4 though. He's got the hex over Federer this year.

^ Agreed about Hewitt. Tenacious to a fault but he simply does not have the weapons to hurt the likes of Federer & Nadal these days. It says it all that Federer cruised past him in straight sets, yet really didn't move out of third gear.

re Murray: I just really don't like his demeanour & the way he carries himself around the court. He's still young, granted, but there's a real petulance about the way he conducts his business - a complete lack of class about the guy. He strikes me as being a total brat, to be honest. Of course he's far from alone on the tennis circuit in that regard, but he's not a particularly popular guy on the tour for good reason. He's been a narky little tit in countless press interviews & I've lost count of the number of times I've seen him snap at ball boys & girls. No need.

Aggression & a burning desire to win is commendable & essential if you're going to be fighting for the top honours (and something that "Tiger" Tim was always lacking) but his grimaces & surly, tetchy behaviour leave a nasty taste in my mouth. Yes Andy, mounting an epic comeback at 9:30 in the evening after 5 sets was a terrific achievement & a wonderful display of your new powers of physical endurance & resilience, but did you really have to point at your biceps like a 'roided up posturing WWE wrestler? What a twat.

I'm not a huge fan of his over-reliance on drop-shots & general counter-punching game either. In a way I wish he'd go for his groundstrokes more as he evidently has the ability & his game would be more enjoyable to watch if he did. His court coverage is deceptively quick, he's got a great backhand & a delicate touch (good hands, as it's known) but he lacks the grace & magical finesse of a Federer or the insane cross-court angles generated off both sides by Nadal. I find tennis the most inspirational sport of all when it's played well, but I just don't enjoy watching Murray play. :\

And lastly, Federer aside, Gasquet is my favourite player & I fancy that he would have given Nadal a better game in the quarters. He's one of the most naturally gifted players around & when he's in full flow he's magnificent, as the first 3 sets last night showed, but his mental fragility is notoriously well known & although understandable given the circumstances, the way the centre court crowd turned on him was a pretty ugly development, I thought. It shows the guy's innate class that when he left the court he still turned to acknowledge & applaud the 15,000 people who for the last hour had booed & heckled him. You'd never catch Murray doing that, I assure you.

Bit of course this is Britain, where we just love to overstate the prospects of our sporting hopes & swamp any coverage with endless jingoistic nonsense to the neglect of all the other competitors. How great was Euro2008 in England's absence? Unfortunately, for the next 8 years or so we're going to have 'Murraymania' every time Wimbledon rolls around & it's going to do my fucking nut in! :! Sorry for the ramble, but I had to get it off my chest. :D

re Nadal: I do definitely agree with you about his delaying tactics. The umpires should really start to clamp down on it more, I think, although he has started to get code violations & warnings recently, so hopefully the message is getting through. But dude, he's a phenomenal player (all but unbeatable on clay) with extraordinary energy levels & he chases down shots like a man possessed. He's also a really lovely guy by all accounts. I'd still like Federer to beat him should they meet in the final, but you almost get this sense that there's a wind of momentum behind Nadal this year... Can't wait! %)

Fair enough. Although I think I like Murray because he is a bit of a petulant twat and if I'm honest it's what I used to be like in my brief (and shit) competitive sport career. :D

Agree about English attitudes to home sportsman, the jingoism, madness and about the Euros. Spot on.

Nadal - I guess that's what bothers me. All the talent, so why be like that? Is that his 'edge'? :s

Agree about Nadal's momentum. The potential final could really be a classic. Master and apprentice who's on the cusp of toppling him...

Murray to lose in 3 tomorrow by the way.

Lleyton had the wood over Federer for the first 6 or 7 matches they played circa '01-'02 when he was #1 in the world.

Then there was the Davis Cup semi final in 2003.

Played on Grass in Melbourne.

Hewitt came back from 2 sets to love and 5-2 down in the 3rd to win in 5 sets.

However, Lleyton isn't the player he was then, and Rog has just gone from strength to strength...

CB.

GO SAFIN!

Ive always liked his hard hitting style hope he atleast gives Roger a good match. He has a couple of grand slams and been runner up once or twice, with his temperament that is no mean feet, if he is in the zone he can take anyone out, his cross court backhand is a killer.

Man, Nadal and Federer both looked unstoppable, could be an epic final.

You guys actually like watching Tennis on TV? cmon what else do you watch Golf? or maybe some exciting Bowling8)

Yeah, it's my favourite sport.

Funny that isn't it? It's almost as if, you know, different people like different things...

Here, have this back: 8)

Yeah... WOW... shock...

If you don't have anything constructive to add to a thread, then don't.

Not rocket surgery...

i really enjoy watching golf on tv - i've attended golf tournaments and you get to see about one percent of one percent of the action. on tv, you get a much more complete view and camera angles you couldn't hope to see irl.

i echo pinholestar - imagine different people enjoying different things...
