Will Self on the Prozac Economy

my imaginary girlfriend and i were talking last night, she reckons prozac and the rest of the depression drugs are little more than placebo whereas electro shock therapy is apparently 97% effective, just suffers from a bad reputation(!)

they now kindly have you unconcious before they shock the shit out of you. nice of them, that

electro shock therapy is apparently 97% effective,

Yeah in Zombiefying people.

SSRIs are significantly more effective than placebo. That is the consensus verdict of all the studies ever done. I'd link to all the references if i could be arsed.

If EST was so effective they'd still be using it now. I dont believe any 'developed' nation uses such inhumane 'treatment' any more ?

Propofol is usually used as the anesthetic, but there investigations now into using ketamine instead which supposedly augments the treatment.

it is also still legal for ect to be carried out without consent in the prison system. read up while i was in there :D

It's legal to carry out ECT on anyone without consent as long as you have followed the correct process via the Mental Health Act AFAIK

When my mate was sectioned last year I used to walk past the ECT room on my way to visit him. Definitely still goes on in Edinburgh, either that or the staff have a particularly twisted sense of humour leaving all the signs up!

It's outrageous. It's a leftover from Victorian times, and how the mentally ill were treated in those days.

I dont suppose they had the technology in those days, but i mean the level of cruelty is the same.

First done in 1938 apparently.

As they don't know how it works, I've always thought of it as the equivalent of giving a faulty TV a hard thump to get it going again. Sometimes it works, other times it just fucks it forever.

Pleased to hear Self call the prozac withdrawal symptoms that, rather than fucking discontinuation syndrome.

Anyone seen 'Requiem For A Dream' ? It's all about drugs.

SPOILERS BELOW.

This nice old lady becomes addicted to uppers, isolated and fails to eat or take any care of herself. After a harrowing scene of her riding on the subway and the horror and pity of the other passengers she gets given ECT; she emerges from that brain dead, and all the other disasterous threads of the film come together at the same time. This had me sobbing my heart out for about 5 minutes first time i saw it.

The soundtrack is awesome too and gives the film a heavyweight punch.

One Of The Most Powerful Movies Ever IMO.

To be fair, and I'm just going on what I've read on wikipedia, serious brain damage does not seem to be a likely outcome. Short-term (in both senses!) memory loss is the most common side effect - loss of recent memories, and temporary loss of long-term memories.

It's a common misconception that the pupils dilate after taking opiates.

Non drug takers dont seem to know the difference between H and E. I suspect Arfonsky knew that but dilating pupils are more visually dramatic I guess.

Kronos Quartet - Requiem for a Dream (complete)

It does take a little while to 'get going' 4:30 onwards if you want to avoid the slow build up. Absolutely glorious as a standalone piece. As a background to emotionally moving scenes it was mind blowing. Its a well known bit of music now, but watching Requiem was the first time I heard it.
