I've been sober for over a year now and started drinking about over a pint of vodka a day for the past 3 weeks. When I wake up I feel like I need it and instantly go and get some. I've been through very bad withdrawals in the past and was wondering if I was more susceptible to withdrawals because of my past. Thanks for your help!

If you 'need' any amount of any drug your going to feel withdrawals! FWIW sudden alcohol withdrawal can kill you so try a taper (take less and less each day).

Your previous experiences will not have a physical impact on you so - taper !

How long were you dependent on alcohol and have been addicted to it prior to getting clean and this new episode of alcohol mis/over-use?

You almost certainly will experience some degree of acute withdrawal if you were formally dependent and addicted to it. How severe it is will probably depend on how dependent you were before and prior experiences of withdrawal.

How bad was your withdrawal from it getting off it prior to this happening? Your prior experience of acute withdrawal is basically how you need to gauge what you will experience this time around. It is difficult for us to determine the severity of what it will be like for you now.

You should begin to notice symptoms within 12 hours of not drinking. If it isn’t bad by the 24 hour mark, it probably won’t be life threatening, though it will probably be nice and uncomfortable (insomnia, some GI disfunction, anxiety, depression mood swings, etc. etc., all the “normal” symptoms of acute withdrawal will apply to one degree or another).

Get your hands on some Chlordiazepoxide (Librium), Clonazepam, Diazepam or Baclofen to assist you in your detox. Get some Valproic Acid to help ensure you will not experience a seizure at the very least. If nothing else a doctor should be readily willing to prescribe Librium, Baclofen and Valproic Acid because they are not really abuse-able in your situation and are commonly used to treat the acute withdrawal of alcohol withdrawal.

This article discussing 3 Regimens for alcohol withdrawal and detoxification may be useful.

I was extremely dependant on it in the past. Drinking over a half gallon of vodka a day and I've had seizures from it. I know I'm not up to that point but was just trying to get some help on how I would feel if I just stopped now.

You would have fewer symptoms stopping now than a month from now, let alone a week from now, that is the obly certainty I can provide you with. Good luck OP! You can do this; youre stronger than you even know.

You can minimize your withdrawals by doing a librium taper. I would talk to your doctor about it. They take alcohol withdrawal fairly seriously. In fact benzos and alcohol are the only two withdrawals that a hospital will admit you for, and treat you. (Sorry opiate addicts...you would be deemed very lucky and the attending doctor very compassionate if he eased your withdrawals with dilaudid or morphine before sending you on your way.)

Please keep in mind that if your withdrawals become very bad/debilitating you should go to the hospital.

If you have had bad withdrawal in the past then this indicates you are much more likely to have a rough time then someone who has not.

How long does it take you to finish the pint and do you drink anything else during the day?

Yes, given your history you will have withdrawal. Can you get some blood pressure meds, antisiezure meds, and possibly some Librium to taper?
