To my knowledge wild lettuce is legal but this thread is merely harm reduction and identifying the difference between toxic American Burnweed ( E. hieraciifolia) and wild lettuce (typically Lactuca virosa )
Both American Burnweed and wild lettuce are common outdoor weeds with similiar ''flowers,'' which are both yellow and similar leaves.

The MAIN difference with American Burnweed is that the leaves are thorny and sharp.

Two main tests for identification for American Burnweed is to place the leaves and flowers in a bowl enclose it and let it sit in water. American Burnweed has a HORRIBLE smell (you will remember it) that smells like sewage and looks like sewage.
Another is the root, it should be hollow plain and green. Wild lettuce usually leaks an opium like sap when cut.

Why is American Burnweed toxic you may ask :?
American Burnweed contains Senocionine 1

[h=1]Pyrrolizidine alkaloid![/h]Pyrrolizidine alkaloids are produced by plants to ward off plant herbivores. [From wikipedia]Unsaturated pyrrolizidine alkaloids are hepatotoxic, that is, damaging to theliver PAs also cause liver cancer and Hepatic veno-occlusive disease!
Be safe and identify whats in plants and what they are before you blindly grab them and eat them for some quick high! Plants can be as dangerous as any drug!
