Why was MET left out of TiHKAL?

Does anyone have any idea why MET was left out of TiHKAL? 4-HO-MET is included, so surely Shulgin would have been aware of the simple tryptamine MET. Is there any reason to suspect that MET was consciously omitted?

The precursors are expensive and Shulgin was not interested in trying every possible pair of alkyl groups on a tryptamine.

After reading through part II of pihkal and tihkal several times, it does seem that Dr. Shulgin would explore an exciting area for a bit, lay the groundwork for forthcoming scientists, and then move onto a new group of compounds. I'm sure he could have made every single combination of alkyl groups up to di-octyl-tryptamine, on every single n,n-, 4-ho, and 5-meo tryptamine, and dozens more 2C-T-X drugs, but after making 2C-T-21, it's as though he says "okay, this has been really exciting, but I have other things to discover".

I hope I get to see in my lifetime the pseudo-2C drugs (that is the 2C-X analogues with a 2,4,6 ring substitution pattern as oppose to the 2,4,5 ring substitution pattern). I wish there was more entries for those than just psi-DOM and psi-2C-T-4.

...it's interesting to consdier that there could even be all the NBOMe verisons of the 2,4,6 drugs...crazy ! endless amounts of psychedelic drugs.

Thanks for the intelligent answers, guys.

I'm not much of a chemist myself, so some of this is way over my head. I'm more of a poet. To an (irrational) point, it creeps me out that `MET` is the egyptian word for Death. Is there is any basis for MET (or its fumes) having toxic properties?

I would also be interested to learn more about why 4-HO-MET has been suggested of MAOI activity, wheras 4-HO-DMT is not an MAOI.

Well, MET is just short for methylethyltryptamine... I doubt it has anything to do with death (as far as I know, MET is not toxic thru fumes or in any other manner)

the MET i have is a bit caustic feeling to the mouth & thus difficult to smoke, but not all that much more unpleasant than DPT or DMT. Noticeably so though. Could just be my batch. Also, MET is mentioned in the MiPT entry (#47) under extensions & commentary, & there is an oral dosage range given. I may be trying MET orally with an MAOI at some point in the not too distant future :D

As far as the MET/egyptian word for death thing goes...I believe you are thinking of Ma'at, actually. Ma'at was/is the egyptian god of truth, and justice, the hearts of the newly dead would be weighed against the feather of Ma'at by Anubis, then fet to ammit, the devourer of hearts if they were heavier, upon which the soul of the deceased would be condemned to duat, the egyptian underworld.

MET is one of my favorite tryptamines; it went well with anything else psychedelic or empathogenic, didnt last too long, and never got out of control. Really nice stuff - visuals were very interesting, being less technicolor than other tryptamines and dark in hue. Really nice head space with this substance too. I miss it very much.

Simply because Shulgin is a busy man, and was only really laying down the foundation for psychonaut chemists to further investigate.

and like Chemical Wizard stated, there are soooo many fucking possibilities with the Phens and Trypts it's almost endless, if Shulgin did what he could have done with Pihkal the damn book would be fatter than a bible, though I must say it would be an awesome read, and I'd cherish it like it were my religious book.

I've always thought that it seemed the enthusiasm Sasha felt for phenethylamines did not extend as fully for the tryptamines. TiHKAL just didn't seem as heartfelt or thorough as PiHKAL.

^ I also agree, I feel like he went way farther with the phens,

I'm sure eventually he would have found the most bomb ass trypt substitution.

Yeah reading tihkal im always struck by the thought that i wish there had been as many tryptamines explored as there were phenethylamines.
