Why is there such a disconnect between European and American humor? In your opinion

Indeed. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's donkey. OTW bro do you even Proverbs?

"Do not lust in your heart after her beauty or let her captivate you with her eyes"

Proverbs 6:25-26

And to think the lounge makes fun of droppers for missing the point

Mind you he is asking about humour in a forum full of eeyores.

IMO Limmy is probably the funniest,
most creative comedian of the past few years. His show was great, but his other stuff, like webcams, just shows how sharp his improvised stuff is. I don't think I've laughed so much at anything as him singing along to 'you win again', claiming the lyrics were really about sexual abuse.

That said, he wouldn't take off in America, even if they could understand his accent, because one thing they never seemed to get was surreal humour. I heard Vic and Bob toured there and bombed. They had a routine where Bob would come on with his 'Lucky Carpet' which was a full sized, 12 foot rolled up carpet, and all they could hear from the audience was incredulous utterances of 'it's too big!'8(

^Fuckin fantastic =D

Ya just gotta love Viz don't ya? ;)

I'm going to have to restart my subscription, even though it's shite these days =D

The recruitment ads they sometimes do are fucking hilarious:

Duties will include standing watching an armchair burn whilst drinking methylated spirits. The ability to make roaring noises is essential...The ability to occasionally catch fire would be beneficial

oddly, the absurd humour of monty python has quite a large underground following in the u.s. and, while i thin that vic reeves big night out and such tip their hat to it big time, i think that vic and bob are a little out there for the u.s.

plus, the accents.

American Shameless and the British one are two completely different animals too.

LOVE the yank version, it's superiour in so many ways, humour, acting, script, pace, much deeper characterisation. And William H Macy. Macy is one of the most under utilised actors of his time. So good to get to see him in this show.

satire certainly seems to be lost on a lot of americans, for example the recent video of stephen colbert doing a public access tv show in which he interviews eminem (basically an american alan partridge knowing me, knowing you) - I've seen so many people think it is 100% serious.

video here : https://youtu.be/rVPlMM_aSn4?t=1315 (it is very funny but again it is 'different' from alan partridge in the way the US 'the office' is different from the UK version)

I think you are right in saying that some things in the US are just so ludicrous from a british perspective that they already seem like satire or comedy.

I have hesitated to bring this up since it's a sensitive subject but this particular clip of brass eye, https://youtu.be/NAQy8v0d_qo - I have shown it to americans who thought it was real and factual - but is telling that shortly after the massacre in Charleston, the NRA was suggesting it could have been prevented if priests were armed with guns.

Brass eye was as much a cultural critique as it was comedy, like Jonathon Meades programmes perhaps but with a sense of humour. I don't think this kind of introspective analysis has much space in america where so many are convinced they live in the worlds greatest country with the worlds greatest culture and are too busy criticising other nations (politically and with force) to look too closely at their own failings and absurdity.

is this satire or something
