Why is it that people who have less material things tend to be the happiest?

Having objects in the world means having attachments. Attachments external to the body make it harder to feel the Oneness of life, it makes the person feel separate from the universe.

That made no sense. Objects are part of the universe. Indeed, no objects exist outside of the UNIverse, including you, and to discuss being separate from the universe is meaningless and simply nonsense.

I think that it's about desire.
If you want something, you realize you don't have it and are unhappy.
If you have no wants, you're content.

It isn't about what you have, it's about what you want.

Possibly..

It might also be possible that to want for something gives you a purpose or a goal to work toward.
If you want for nothing, what is there left to achieve?
Maybe some people who are rich, who could have anything they desire, feel unfulfilled in some way because they aren't being challenged?

From the outside looking in, when I watch The Real Housewives of Orange County lol, it looks like they over dramatize the details of their friendships to give themselves something to do. Like when Fernanda says she was disappointed Tamra didn't come to her party and Tamra gets all upset because she was moving. I mean, why does it matter? You are both at a party now. You could do your friendship party time NOW, instead of arguing over why didn't come to the last party. Come on people, it's not a real problem. Tamra, Fernanda was disappointed because she likes you, it's a good thing, no fighting! Fernanda, Tamra was busy before, maybe she could've organised her move around your party, but she didn't, it wasn't to spite you, she wants to be friends too, no fighting!

(yeah NZ gets TV late, this episode just aired here)

I don't think that having aspiration is the same as wanting though ha.
You can aspire (want lol, I know, but semantics sucks) to be your best, but that might include the shedding of desire (want lol).

You've got a great point about boredom though.

Hi, I am Raven. I am on a spiritual path, and wished to clear my mind, which was very troubled. I noticed that the main issue bothering me, was my strong desire for more material things - in my case, vinyl records. At one stage, I had a big collection (520 LP's and 500 singles - to me, this was a lot!). I could not stop craving more, and would wake every morning with this on my mind. However, I am also an artist and poet, so I felt that this, along with my spiritual path, could give me an alternative.

So gradually, I sold/gave away all the records (to charity shops) - there are only seven left, which I am selling. I do need to get a little money back, otherwise I'd give away the lot. The music system (separates) is going too.

Today, I have found peace. No longer do I base my happiness on material things. Instead, I concentrate on creating a happy home life for my child and myself, and only owning what I need. I did buy a DAB radio - this is reasonable I feel, and fits in with a less materialistic lifestyle.

This is my path and choice, but maybe it would work for others? It works for me.

Money doesn't buy you happiness but it allows you to choose your own form of misery.
