An ex-girlfriend of mine first brought this phenomenon to my attention several years ago. She told me that beer would always get her so drunk, in fact she said she would start to feel drunk even after drinking just one beer whereas she could drink 2 shots of liquor (twice as much alcohol) and remain relatively sober. At first I did not believe her but now I must admit that in my experience she was absolutely right.

I don't drink much these days, I don't like getting drunk anymore, or even tipsy. I just like the subtle mood lift I get from slowly drinking a drink or two over the course of an hour or two. But I like to maintain a clear head. In my alcoholic days, I was a huge beer fan but I find that now that I dont want to get drunk, I find myself drinking vodka, whiskey or wine instead. I know that seems nonsensical but its true. I can drink 2 or 3 shots of vodka over the course of 3 hours or so and not even get tipsy, just a subtle mood lift with a very clear head. However, if I tried to drink three beers in that same time, my head would always be cloudy. I definitely feel a much stronger buzz from 2 beers than 2 shots of liquor.

Why is this?

Maybe it gets absorbed easier when mixed with water? I don't know, GABAergics are definitely not my cup of tea and I never drink.
