Why don't people in NSW write "NSW" in their addresses?

Ok this might seem like a really minor gripe (and it is ;) ), but I work in promotions/PR and get lots of competition entries, sample requests etc. etc which I then have to type into databases.

One thing that has ALWAYS stood out is the fact that people in NSW don't feel the need to write "NSW" in their return address. For example, it'll be:

Joe Bloggs, 67 Railway Parade, Granville 2142, not

Joe Bloggs, 67 Railway Parade, Granville, NSW, 2142.

Worse, often they leave off the postcode altogether. Whenever I get a non-postcoder, it's always from NSW or occasionally QLD.

Just curious - anyone shed some light on the lack of addressing etiquette eminating from NSW? ;) ;)

ps. please don't take this as a serious gripe, I just find it interesting

'cause they're fucking arrogant pricks? ;)

no, i'm generalising a *little* of course, but i'm sure the celebrity and elitist culture that (supposedly, i've never been) exists up there has *something* to do with it...

See that's what I kinda thought, but thanks for saying it for me ;)

=D

It does seem a little arrogant, and I guess it's started to annoy me.... not writing your postcode especially. It sort of presumes that "everyone" knows where your suburb is, which of course, people don't, generally - outside NSW. Thank god for Australia Post's little postcode book.

Another curiosity is Queenslanders abbreviating their state to "Q" not "QLD". That one doesn't bug me though.

^^
I suppose you are one of those people who lives by the quote from cruel intentions

"email is for perverts and losers."

bout the NSW thing, it could be we are lazy or we have never been expected to do it... Like we dont get return to sender if we dont... so why do it :)

Bahaha (now u have to edit)
VVVV

slm: everyone knows that queenslanders have melted brains though, so we should let them off...writing more than one letter must be so intense for them!

ooh, kitty's gonna be mad :)

1234 - Thats alright man, you're from Victoria, so we'll let it slide this time...

I also put "NSW" in my address, every single motherfuckin' time I write it.
So, like, whatever!!

1234- "celebrity and elitist culture" WTF?!!!!

I'm not gonna make any stupid comparisons between or generalisations about NSW and Victoria, but gawd ppl come out with some shit sometimes!!

:X

Ok now to add a new spice, BUT isnt having a POSTCODE something that can "normally" distinguish whether or not it is nsw vic tas etc?

Eg nsw is normally always starting with 2

vic with 4

tas with 6?

nt with 0

This might be the reason "some" people might just not put it.

That said, I always put my state, so dont jump down my throat. Australia post are dumbasses, they need a RIDICULOUS amount MORE imho than the actual address to get somewhere... hehehe

Victoria's with a 3, but yeah, that's what I was thinking as well. If someone puts "5066" in an address, I know that's a South Australian address. If it's a 2XXX postcode, it's NSW.

I think the state part is becoming more and more redundant. I've always put my state as part of my address but I don't really see its function, to be honest.

Like with phone numbers - I know that if a number is 08 8XXX XXXX, it's an Adelaide number. If it's 02 98XX XXXX, it's Sydney city.

Down with states, I say!

("Q" is fine by me too - I know people who just put V for Victoria. I guess "Q" makes the Queenslanders feel cooler.)

^^ anna's right - it's redundant to put the state down - it's all based on the postcode anyway - 2300 means a specific geographical region and thus the states a given. I always put it down anyway as it looks like it's missing something otherwise.

However, I'm not too sure we should get rid of states else we'd not be able to point and laugh at how silly people in other states are.. ermm bluelighters excepted ofcourse!! ;)

See this is true; and I understand about the numbers etc. But still - it's *only* people from NSW who seem to find it redundant to put their state on the address (with exceptions, of course Tali). Everyone else still does. Even when I address a letter to someone else in Victoria I still write "VIC". That's my point. I was just curious about this cultural phenomenon. :)
As I said, no biggie. I was actually just wondering if it was something conscious or not.

slm: I hope not, but I wonder if it's similar to the phenomenon of how whenever americans are asked where they are from they will almost always give a city and/or state.

Very rarely do you get the answer 'America' or 'USA' as it's just assumed that everybody is supposed to know already! I can't think of any other country where people do this!

I have to say I have never written NSW on my letters...
but then again I live in WA
HAHAHAHA
I AM A GODLY COMEDIAN... BOWN DOWN BEFORE ME!
Sorry, got a bit carried away then.
=)

Yeah, I was going for the arrogant prick thing as well Strawbs... but what would I know,
I live on the other side of Australia.
=D

You mean there are other states in Australia? ;)

Yes due to our superiority we do not have to write NSW. If there is no state written in the address you should automatically presume it is from the best state in Australia...
