Why does everything cause Stevens-Johnson syndrome?

I mean, everything. I ran across this looking into amantadine, and damn.

It's a horrible disease, too. I mean, look at the picture at the top of the Wikipedia page. The list of causes apparently includes "influenza, herpes, mononucleosis (EBV), mumps, Ted Nugent songs (cat scratch fever), cocaine, allopurinol, diclofenac, etravirine, Isotretinoin, aka Accutane, fluconazole, valdecoxib, sitagliptin, oseltamivir, penicillins, barbiturates, sulfonamides, phenytoin, azithromycin, oxcarbazepine, zonisamide, modafinil, lamotrigine, nevirapine, pyrimethamine, ibuprofen, ethosuximide, carbamazepine, nystatin, phenyltoin, ginseng, and lupus".

Yes, lupus.

Somehow, I don't think any of these actually cause SJS. Post hoc ergo propter hoc.

All of these cause metabolites to which prolonged exposure can cause cell death. In people with SJS these toxins accumulate in the epidermis causing it to die. Virtually anything that has a toxic metabolite which your body can confuse for something else is a potential cause of SJS. Even non toxic substances like ginseng over time metabolize into toxins which if they are not removed from your body can start causing cell degredation. SJS is a malfunction of your metabolic waste system generally induced by stress factors and certain chemicals which your body has difficulty differentiating between.

this is an autoimmune disease, if the drug or infection causes damage, the immune system can malfunction and not properly recognise self. Anything that can cause an allergic reaction can trigger it.

I think that he acutely contracted Stevens-Johnson syndrome after typing the word 'before'. The irony of fate I guess?

Yeah not clicking the links... learned my lesson on theforum and unnet...

Anyway, I've seen a reaction first-hand with lamotrigine (lamictal) - that's why they put people on it so slowly. It doesn't surprise me to see antibiotics on there, nor do tegretol and trileptal (carbamazepine and oxcarbazepine) but Eppstein-Barr is interesting since a good 90% of the pop will have it at some point.
