I was at the dentist over the weekend and realised he was working a serious 6 days a week.

Being pretty much the same work day after day after day, I figured it must get boring as hell although I figure he is earning a packet.

And it got me thinking.............why do people do there jobs?

Do you do your job purely cos of the money?

Do you love your job and couldnt give a rats about the doe?

Do you work simply because you have to in order to pay the bills?

I expect there is a heap of different reasons.

Me well I work whatever i have to in order to get the bills paid and live reasonable comfy and not an hour more. I enjoy my work but not more than i enjoy not working.

I am probably best summed up by saying that i work to live. I dont live to work.

I definitely don't live to work. I like what I do for a living better than anything else I think I'm qualified to do. (And better than a lot of things I'm not even qualified for.) I get paid well and I'm (generally) treated with respect by the people I deal with. And some of the people I work with are actually very neat people who I'm pleased to know.

However, if I won a lottery - even a small one - I'd quit. Poof. You wouldn't see me on TV holding that big check saying, "This isn't going to change my life." It would bloody well change mine. I'd say See ya later, alligator.

i took a pay cut from my previous job where i was in my sixth year to do this new one which is also a million times more busy, difficult and stressful, but i am so glad i did.

where i am now, i'm not just making some fat bastard richer, i'm actually making a significant impact on people's lives. being able to assist requires me to be very much on the ball at all times. that, mixed with the bit of tea i have at work, and everyday i go through bouts where i feel like i'm tweaking. my mind gets really wired from it.

i can see why everyone i work with drink and smoke a lot. my de-stress is in the form of GTAIV and Mario Kat Wii, and what little exercise i manager to squeeze in. oh and my kitten is a bundle of joy too.

btw: i'm an industrial organiser. i like the job a lot but only wish i were paid more. too bad unions aren't very rich.

btw2: unemployment feels like death to me.

to fuel my addiction. and its not a drug addiction; it's got to do with asphalt and rubber and friction and velocity :)

benefits are also nice. otherwise i don't really give a shit and would quit till i could find something i enjoy doing more

To get a reference in order to (hopefully) get into grad school next year. If that falls through, then it's career change time for me.

1.) I like money.
2.) I hate feeling useless.
3.) I also hate being jobless more than I hate doing a bad job.
4.) My bosses are really cool--friends as well as managers--and my hours are flexible.

(Assuming I am not out of commission at the moment)

I do my Job...
1. As an alternative to drug addiction
2. To see the world
3. Money is good
4. To not be around my parents or my guilt-ridden home
5. Because I do it well

In our capitalist, market-driven world, it is better to work with something you don't mind doing, rather than work with something you love and sell your passion away.

I'm curious as to what kinds of jobs you all do.

My school literally is a job. I take maybe one academic class a semester but all the other classes are studio classes and after those are done I am a costume shop slave. I liked it for a while and I enjoy doing things I'm good at, like dying. I could probably stay in the dye room until I die of contact with the poisonous chemicals I handle.

^ Funny you mention schools and dying (love the pun, btw ;)). I am currently an ESL teacher, but I'd like to end up working in the death industry (either alternative burial or grief counselling).

1. I work for myself.
2. The moneys very good for what i do.
3. I make my own hours so I make sure im home by 2 pm.
4. I'm in 3 to 5 homes each day and have a great customer base , I have fun at what I do . ;)

tell me about it. i have one of those too.

i work my job for an equal amount of "need the money to fulfill my families needs" and "i love it" and "because the world needs someone like me doing it"

p.s. this question is very different for someone in their late teens vs a thirty something. your options and or goals in life are greatly diminished after a decade or two

i like what i do, i make ok money and i've been able to move up within the company a great deal in the past 4 years. :) also some of the people i work with are tons of fun to be around, so it makes the bad days a lot better.

i took the job because it was more flexible than my previous job, the current job is willing to work around my school schedule. and its less than a mile from my house, as opposed to about 25. however, i took a paycut which sucks.

i have stuck with the job because i care about the kids. some of them get there before i do and leave after me, 10 hours is a long time to be in daycare. but its rewarding to see the impact i have on their lives.

its fun and i get paid enough to live on and i get to pursue my hobby with the energy and dedication i'd like to. i couldn't ask for a better situation.

Really, one of the biggest reasons that I stay at my job is because I am very good at it and I sort of like the fact that I am sort of a "go to" person in my department and I can be counted on for knowing the correct answer to a question.

I think I have sort of "out grown" my job though and I do find it pretty redundant at times, but for the most part I am pretty comfortable, and it's hard for me to leave comfort even if I know I could do better.

The benefits are also a HUGE contributing factor with my keeping my job, I carry the health insurance for both my husband and I as his company does not offer health insurance.

I would really like to own my own business one day, a plan may be coming into action for that to become a reality, but nothing is really laid out at this point, and I'm not sure how serious my potential business partner is at this point in time. *shrugs*
