why do we do drugs?

yeah this question crosses my mind everytime i even attempt to do drugs..yeah i do a lot of drugs...but why? i can't seem to have a legitimate answer for this question....i like the way it makes me feel...and i'm curious...i guess curiousity is the main thing... i try new drugs because i'm curious not because i just wanna get fucked up...their fun but i think i have got carried away in the past month i have did so many drugs in such a short period of time... i'm going overboard i know but i will only live once...and dammit i'm gonna live it to the fullest....so, why do you do drugs?beside the fact that you want to escape reality and feel good.......

well u got those speed freaks who are into stimulants...and those mellow people who are into downers and depressants...i on the otherhand thrive on the hallucinatory end of the drug chain...i am a psychonaut and i'm interested in the mechanics of the mind...then u got yer entheogists who are about finding religious meaning thru drugs...drugs to me are merely tools or enhancements like spices to my sense of perception...
 
Why do people drink coffee every morning or have cocktails while discussing business at lunch? Why do people steal from stores? Not to flame but I think this is a pretty ignorant question and maybe would be better in the philosophy or social section than other drugs. I dont think youll get too many serious responses here and the questions pretty vague anyways. It all comes down to the fact that everyone has reasons for the things they do whether it be drugs or any other habit theyve picked up. You might as well ask why do we go on the internet. Sorry to flame no offense just think its inappropriate for the part of the forum at the very least.
 
No way dude. This is a totally valid question. Very basic, and very important.
I do drugs because it really shows to me that perception is everything. Alot of times i can percieve very simple but important things about life and myself that i dont pick up on while sober. I guess everybody is different in this respect, and obviously drugs arent benificial for every person, but I've can honestly say that I've learned alot while under the influence of drugs.
 
I take psychedelics for their psychedelic effect, narcotics for their pleasing narcotic effect, stimulants for their stimulating effect, and depressants for their depressant effect. I take Ketamine and Salvia Divinorum to destroy myself.

well, to liquidvibz..i don't think my question was ignorant...and most people who answered , answered seriously....and THANKS to ecoli...there are many different reasons why people do drugs...and by the way liquid i would've posted it in the spirituality section, but i post everything there so i didn't.....it's about freedom of speech anyways....i can post anything i want anywhere i want....if you thought the question was ignorant then why did you waste your time on coming in here and giving your opinion on it...did you want to make someone feel like shit for a few seconds or something... well, whatever it doesn't matter i thought my question would get a lot of responses that are serious...we usually just talk about what drugs we do, how we do them, when we do them, how often, what we do while on them, etc....but we never ask the question why...so, i decided too....drugs are totally different than coffee and cocktails....coffee and cocktails don't usually fuck you up...not like ecstasy or coke....you totally compared the wrong thing to drugs....that's like comparing...chocolate to shit...there's no comparison besides the fact it's brown...anyways don't post on something if it's a ignorant question....because that's ignorant...

i think it is an excellent post...and not just cuz yer a chick and id like to bang ya. i do them because i crave high stimulation. its genetic, i delude my self into believing it is for spiritual advancement, but i think im trying to find the great american novel in the netherregions of my mind. sell it for the movie rights, star in it and become rich and live out my days like hugh hefner.

I honestly don't think I take drugs as an escape, because I only do them when I'm with friends that I'd have an awesome time with even if I was sober. If I used drugs as an escape, it seems to me that I would do them when I was home alone, lonely, or stressed out about things, which I never do.
I pretty much just use on saturday nights, and I look forward to it all week long. I like drugs because they are fun. Simple as that. It's kind of like going on a vacation without traveling any real distance. I always try to learn from it, I guess to offset any physical damage it does.
 
what liqwid said is true in essence...but he is lookin at the big picture...for that there is no real answer...however pisces is looking for responses on the personal level...for that there is an answer particular to the individual...
 
i only do them when i am on top of the world and the money is flowing. when im depressed and broke my pathetic escape is movies and books. i just veg nd go to movies, stack up on rentals.
everyone has personal reasons but escape is not one of them for me

i think different people do drugs for different reasons, obviously.
some people do drugs largely to escape their lives. this is especially true of people who are psychologically addicted to drugs. people who always want to be fucked up and hate being sober, IMHO, can't handle reality and living their lives. these kind of people often give drugs a bad name, sadly.
some people use drugs for fun. i would say at least half of all drug users (with most of the other half in the escapist category) use drugs for their recreational value. for thses people, drugs are just another way to spend free time -- like watching movies, going rollerblading, playing cards. another form of entertainment. as long as these people don't start abusing drugs for their escapist qualities and use drugs responsibly, i think recreational drug users are pretty harmless.
then there are some, though very few, people who use drugs almost as a scientific experiment. these people are often highly intelligent, often spiritual, and doing drugs is about expanding their boundaries and their concept of reality. true drug users of this type will only try a certain drug a couple of times to get a feel for it, but then they get bored and move on. though they may enjoy being high, the main purpose of their drug use is to examine themselves, their minds, and their surroundings while in an altered state of consciousness. an example of such a person would be the great chemist and philosopher alexander shulgin.
all of the three types have a little bit of the other two types - every person has a degree of escapism, a degree of fun-loving, and of scientific curiosity. but generally, i believe that drug users can be categorized as above.

in my experiance every reasaon has to do with reality......now someone is of course gonna find one that isnt but touche
some people do them to escape reality
some peole do them to be able to handle reality (my reason)
some people do them to make their reality more exciting or rewarding
some people do them to figure our their reality.
i think the drug depends on the reason....
