Why do people tan?

Hmmm caffeine. It's aaalll goood lgdf<3

And for whats its worth, I dont think those who get some sun, tan, use self-tanners, or those who choose to coop themselves up in the house 24/7 are dumb, or ignorant, or doing something horribly wrong. We're all different people, have different skin types and colors and predispositions and genes, and because of this, what may affect one will not be the same for another.

But I do live by the adage that "too much of a good thing can be bad" and that moderation is really the key for mostly everything anyway. :) (well, I try...)

Women and girls with tan skin are super sexy, that pale ass white skin is not hot at all, i love them summer cause thats when the sexy ladies show off their terrific tans. Fake tans from tanning beds suck, want to look hot and super sexy get a tan the natural way at the beach or sumthing and you will def get some points and get guys looking and drooling over your pretty skin color. :)

It doesn't matter what you consider it. Exposure of your skin to UV-B rays , whether from the sun or from a fluorescent tanning lamp, induces the same physiological changes and produces the same Vitamin D from cholesterol. Routine exposure to UV-B is a necessity for long term human health. While too much sun can increase your risk of skin cancer, too little sun increases your risk of every other type of cancer a whole lot more.

100% agree. I have medium toned skin to begin with but try to go to the tanning salon once a week. It balances both the texture and color of my skin. Besides, how often do you lie down for fifteen minutes and do NOTHING. I find it relaxing as well. Tanning beds/sunshine are just fine, beneficial rather, if used in moderation.

Kim Kardashian badly sunburned. I dont know which is worse, letting yourself
burn like that or letting your enormous sunglasses leave an absurd mark on your face. Duh.

^^ i hate those friggin bug glasses!

tanning is relaxing, and it's nice to have a little color.

it's going to be 80 degrees this weekend. i'm going to my favorite spot in the woods next to this creek to lay naked in the sun. oooh it's going to be pure relaxation, i can't wait. i used to use the tanning beds once in a while, but not in a long time. it was something to do, for cheap, and relaxing. you should see the people working at the tanning salons, it's like orange people central because they get to use the beds for free. they look terrible and sickly, but whatever floats their boat. *shrugs*

when i wasnt working i was down the beach everyday for about 6 months. I hardly have a spare moment anymore to catch some waves and rays but i have noticed i've developed a few fine lines around and under my eyes but im guessing i just need to stop squinting aha

I don't get it. It doesn't look good when you get an artificial tan.

I love pale skin. Not freckly pink tinted skin...but clear pale skin...mmmm <3
Because white people are brainwashed to believe that their own skin isn't good enough.

I agree. And I'm not trying to critisize people who tan, I used to think the same way... to some degree, I still do. We've been told by the media and whatever that tan skin = sexy. It really sucks, that people have to damage their skin just to fit society's standards. I wouldn't say that I'm "pale", but since I don't tan my skin is a lot whiter than most peoples and I've just decided that if someone wants to think im ugly because im not tan then they can kiss my ass!!!!

This is what I have read, as far as confirming it, who can say?
Coco Chanel accidently fueled a tanning crazy by getting too much sun on her yacht from Paris to Cannes. Despite her dismissal of the tan as something to be desired, it was copied and lives on today.

society is fickle.

when pale skin was considered an attribute people would shade themselves from the sun to a degree in order to keep from tanning.

the people who were tan were the people who worked all day outside...

i must admit on some girls a tan looks really good, but i'm pale with freckles, so there's something extremely attractive to me about seeing a pretty girls tan lines. those pale spots make me feel closer to them for some reason. i guess i feel like its almost bringing them "down" to my level, holes in the armor...

just typing that lets me know how much programming i've received.

usually i prefer pale girlies :)

skin color has a big impact on how a girl looks to me

certain facial builds, they do look better with a tan, though. depends on the person

omg. this thread is making me rage! :!:!
my local tanning salon just closed and i still had 25 days of tanning at 40$ a month... i am livid! :X:X:X:X

but as an answer, i (used to) tan because it feels absolutely amazing.
just laying down with a nice mild tingly tanning lotion, 20mg CWE hydrocodone taken 40 minutes prior to tanning, and miles davis for 20 minutes makes you feel like you are in heaven. + you get the added benefit of looking like you take care of yourself.

(I dont mean to thread jack i promise)
Now that i think of it...
Biologists tend to agree that physical symmetry (as an example) has a very large part to do with the factor of attractiveness in animals. So animals who have this symmetry usually have good and healthy genes so its natural instinct to pick an animal mate that is physically symmetrical to ensure healthy lineage. Why then is being tan (in humans) a significant variable in attractiveness (this being a consensus based statement) when tanning can decrease the womans fertility rate?
humans are not very evolutionarily oriented i guess..

^ tanning can make you look a bit more symmetrical, right? it can hide certain features that may be more accentuated on one side, for example
