Stimulants Why do many stimulants decrease appetite?

Why do stimulants like amphetamine, meth, coke, ritalin, propylhexedrine, and ephedrine substantially decrease the appetite? I know they effect dopamine and norepinephrine but why do they cause a lack of appetite? It's interesting to note that stims like caffeine have little effect on appetite.

why is the sky blue and why are krispy kream donuts fucking delicious?

seriously though, maybe someone in the advanced drug discussion section will be able to answer better

so funny i was thinking that response (well, not the donut part ;)) before i scrolled down, but i get hungry eveytime i smoke methamphetamine, and eat allot... seriously like i can and do eat directly after smoking

They activate the stress/panic signals that cancel hunger cravings.
Most stimulants do this.

When fight/flight kicks in you aren't really supposed to be thinking about where to get a bite to eat ;)

Has to do with parasympathetic response I believe. When in "flight or fight" mode ala stimulants, the pupils dialate, the urinary and digestive track slows down( not hungry anymore) and the body begins burning fat and eventually muscle at a high rate, and much of the glycogen reserves in your muscles is used up as well.

Essentially your in beast mode or 110% which is another reason why stims are difficult to maintain at very large doses, as the body runs out of fuel much more quickly, as well as not even getting proper nutrition/hydration because of the anorexic effects. Tolerance and stim both play into it as well; it explains why some people, like someone said above, can eat and sometimes must eat while on a stim.

I lost a TON of weight when I first started taking methylphenidate. Actually, I was very thin for the first 3 years or so.
Unfortunately, as is the case with many positive side effects from all kinds of drugs, it stopped doing that for me:( I keep hoping somehow the appetite suppressing properties will come back ...but I know it's not gonna happen lol. It stopped 3-4 years ago, never to return.
Still very good for my ADHD, though!

I worked for krispy kreme for almost 9 years. I can't even stand the smell anymore.

I don't do the whole scientific thing but I can tell you when your stomach is a revved up from taking an upper of any kind and your body is buzzing, who the heck is thinking about food. I'm usually on the move doing one thing or another. Just my two cents.

i lost a good amount of weight while taking ephedrine every day..i can only imagine what adderal or dexedrine would have done..

since stimulants put you in fight or flight mode, do they make you physically stronger?i cant believe i cant answer my own question as i have alot of experience with ephedrine/adderal..all i know is they make you FEEL stronger..mentally u feel like you can lift a house..

If anything I'd say they make you weaker.. notice how no one you've seen who does a lot of stimulants is big and strong and are all skinny as shit? largely due to malnutrition from not eating as much as they should but I think there's something additional that the drug does where even if you FORCED yourself to eat you'd still lose strength

Taking stimulants in the short-term does make you stronger. For example one study apparently found amphetamines to make arm strength up to 20% stronger (I have no idea what doses they used or how long this increase in strength lasted though). Studies have also found that amphetamines improve athletic performance. And stimulants do make you more energetic. However, I don't know if the adverse effects outweigh the positive effects on strength/performance. But with long-term use (especially recreational use) and the things that often come with it such as fatigue/lack of sleep, poor nutrition, tolerance, stress, etc, it would likely make you weaker.

Yeah heavy physical activity on amps does not feel healthy at all. I try and avoid it.

Not sure if anyone's still interested but here ya go.

Which is why when you take stimulants you feel all panicked and anxious right? Just because it sounds good to you doesn't make it fact and without any research to back it up you probably should just not post anything.

Same goes for you. Amphetamine causes loss of appetite, chronic loss of appetite will lead to malnutrition and wasting. So of course the recreational user will be weak. Swimmingdancer nailed it. If a normal person took amphetamine it would absolutely make them stronger.

From what I've seen there are few willing to do any kind of research but if you really want to know what controls appetite and exactly how amphetamine affects it read this.
