Delve into the cannabis state of mind. Cannabis is a psychedelic and an entheogen, and it can/should be used as such, in addition to being loads of fun and a good social lubricant in low doses.
Using cannabis as an entheogen requires to do it alone (or with a sitter if you feel it is necessary) and in a private and comfortable setting (i.e. not a party, ideally in complete darkness with your favorite music or total silence), and maybe even to be in the right state of mind (wanting to learn vs. wanting to "smoke yourself retarded").
I also recommend going for a high dose (cooking with large amounts or eating hash would be even better), keep low doses for smoking with people, and having a low tolerance probably helps a lot (that means keeping it occasionnal too).
Cannabis will open wide your mind, creativity and perception, it may get freaky, but if it does remember why you're there and learn about yourself, learn about that fear of your unhindered self... And if you do not learn anything, well at least it will have been a few hours of fun. Better luck next time!
By treating cannabis as I would treat any of the higher tryptamines or Shulginates, I've had some very introspective and insightful highs (might even call them "trips"). It kinda helps that my doors' were opened wide by other entheogens (salvia, namely) and never fully closed after that.
All that isn't to say that cannabis shouldn't be used as it is by most people. But its full potential is too often forgotten in my opinion.
