Why do Americans claim to be from a country when it's just heritage?

Are we Americans? Or are we from north America.

America could be anywhere from Canada to Argentina. Just imagine invisible ( parentheses) around anything people from THE UNITED STATES( of America) say about harritage.

It's shorthand. Just like we don't say we are "Italian American", etc.. America is in the name. No one wants to say "United States", it's more cumbersome. No other country in the Western Hemisphere has "America" in it's name.
Do many say, "the USSR", or "the United Kingdom" ("People's Republic of China", " "Democratic People's Republic of Korea", "Republic of Korea", yada)?
