Why are they called "Head Shops"?

In my recent search for a "snuff" bullet I did a search and found a link to "headshop.com". While I did find the thing I was looking for I also started to wonder why they call them head shops. Can you buy head there? Or can you buy heads in there? I haven't seen either in any of the shops I have visited. Does anyone know if the name has a history or a meaning?

Ever heard that Sublime song, "hard work good, and hard work fine, but first take care of head" (from "Smoke Two Joints"). Moral of the story? Headshops sell things that are pleasurable for your head...

Maybe "-head" as in pothead, crackhead, etc., Or maybe if you pay the hippie behind the counter he can give good head :P

fairnymph, it's a bob marley song.

TABula rasa, no I'm pretty sure it's Sublime. It's a common myth that Marley sang it.
As for the headshop question, I thought it spawned from the Deadheads, not sure on that though.

Because the counterculter girls that work there give good head. That's been my experience at least. Definitely not keeper's though...

Not really sure about this but I was talking to a guy that I work with that was a big acid head in the day and he said that it stands for this:
He
Eats
Acid
Daily

"Smoke Two Joints" is neither a Bob Marley nor a Sublime song.
It is by The Toys, and Sublime later covered it.
And as for head shops, yeah I always figured it tied into pothead, crackhead, etc.

originally by The Toys?! i think not. That's a 1960's black R&B girl group!

Given the way we're living, Wouldn't you say we're killing, Ourselves? Why do you say you don't worry?
This is the way we're klling, Ourselves.
we would worry less about what others think of us if we realized how seldom they do.

At first I thought the "pot head" thing too. I never really thought about crack head since these shops have been around longer than crack. I just thought there might me something more meaningful or funny. When I was a kid I thought that was the only place you could buy posters and crap cause my sister used to take me there all the time. I didn't know what she was really buying until later. She still has a one hitter from about 20 years ago!
I guess it isn't interesting after all, just a store for potheads. I guess I don't have to go anymore since I don't even like pot.

if you search (on morpehus, kazaa, or what the hell ever) for "bob marley- smoke two joints" you will get plenty of results. however, i have been looking for a while and have not been able to find any confirmation that he actually sang it. so now i'm on the fence. i checked the 40 oz. to freedom liner notes, and they credit "[C.Kay/M.Kay] (c) Quack Music BMI" for the song. any idea who this is?

"Toys" is a black 60s R&B group.
"The Toys" is a reggae band who originally did Smoke Two Joints. Except people are idiots, and just like how every joke song mp3 in existance is labelled as "weird al" and every prank phone call mp3 as "jerky boys" it seems all reggae is "bob marley" so the file you'll find on kazaa or morpheus that's labelled as "Bob Marley - Smoke Two Joints" is mislabelled, it's The Toys.
fucking internet tards (the people who misname music)

xylo is closest to being correct, but he spelt their name wrong. they also have it done in spanish and french(fucked up shit when your high), and other classics such as "Monster Hash", "What's so bad about a nipple", and many more.
Head probably comes from the old term "Heads" which were acid-heads. Head can also be potsmoke, ie:holding you head in, and a few other things.

I always hesistate to say this, but y'all are stupid. -xylo wasn't the closest to being right, he is right. For all of you who only listen to songs and not albums, there is a track of bradley speaking the credits and thank yous for the sublime album "40 oz. to freedom." It is track 22.
To quote Bradley (R.I.P.):
"When we did that song 'Smoke Two Joints' it was jacked from The Toys."

Sublime sucks, and they coverd "two joints" thats for sure, now weather it was Bob Marley or The Toys who actualy wrote the song first is debatable, now then, if you go to any old antique shope, or a record store, you can find an old Bob Marley Album, with Two Joints on it, odd thing is tho, you can find an Old The Toys album with Two Joints on it as well. but the songs are completly diffrent from what I heard (I havent heard The Toys Version of Two Joints.) if head shops are just for pot heads, why is it that Porn is thier main product, maybe cuz it satisfies your "head"

Yes, Smoke Two Joints was originally done by the Toys, and then Sublime covered it, as well as a band call the rudiments(and one their members was also a member of skankin pickle)
a quickle lesson in punk/ska for everyone
