Why are restaurant foods so dellicious?

Lots of good conversation coming out of this thread, but also hostility. There's no need for that. Fair warning anyone bringing this off the tracks again, action will be taken. A 'select' few are not destroying what is otherwise a really cool thread.

r the
Our roads are shit but i've never mentioned how our cows are grass fed, ever, to anyone.

Anyway, you may have access to quality beef.. but ALL beef in my country is quality. I cant BUY shit stuff if i tried, dude. haha. And, if you are eating top quality beef in a restaurant.. guess where it probably came from? Ill give you a hint.. not 'big country'.

Anyway i am not trying to put america down or anything, but your beef standards are very low, and while you may be 'able' to get quality beef(which usually isnt grown in usa anyway) the majority of your beef is factory farmed, full of anti biotics, and of terrible quality.

I eat red meat almost everyday, and i love it. One of the reasons i never want to go near the united states, besides there horrible political policies and lack of respect for identity and personal information, is the low quality food you guys consume and are essentially forced to eat due to price differences.

Okay, let me take this chance to apologize and extend the proverbial "olive branch"....I am from the North Eastern US and we insult each other and create arguments just for fun...It's nothing personal, believe me! I'm a vegetarian who doesnt eat beef, so I know how fucked up shit is!

Most NZers Ive met always talk about how good the beef is, so it was a joke...no big deal...I like over the top insults and arguing...this is not real life, so...have at it, right?!

I'd come visit u in person, but your fuckin elitist country probably wouldnt let me! you motherfuckers! lol, thats a joke!

While i may not have been to USA to try your beef, you probably havnt tried mine. However i know a few people who have tried your beef and the resounding consensus is.. it sucks.

I take no offense to your comments.. NZ people are retards generally who think this country rocks and has the best everything.. we have good food and it ends there. But as someone who deems food as one of the most important things in life, thats good enough for me :D

PS i got 4 couches, come and crash on them anytime you want ;)

I've been in some pretty high class expensive restaurants where the food is shit. Just bc it's a restaurant does not by any means mean that your getting a great meal

I'm not trying to perpetuate the argument, but what the cow gets fed or how it's raised has less to do with taste than what part of it you happen to be eating.

Damn I want to have some food! It's 3:45 and I'm going starve.

I don't feel like going back downstairs but shit dude... I mean, a bitch is mufkkn hungry.

Much of what's being said isn't relevant to the subject of the original topic. I do however feel that it is deserving of discussion, simply not in this thread. I'm going to go ahead and split this off so the more in depth aspects of genetically modified foods can be discussed without adding clutter to this, which was, I think intended as a more light hearted discussion.

New thread found here.

I've told this story on BL before. When I was in China in 2000, the locals told me about some hijinx that had gone down a few years back whereby a Mongolian hotpot restaurant that was struggling started dosing all their hotpots with opium. They quickly gained a large and loyal following of people who just couldn't put a finger on why they had such a special place in their hearts for the joint. Made headlines nationwide when it got busted.

That's an extreme example, but I don't doubt many restaurants use additives of various kinds to make the food seem tastier, including things most people wouldn't buy in a supermarket and sprinkle on their food.

The answer is very simple -- except for ones that cater to niche markets, restaurants' only concern is how the food tastes. Healthiness takes a back seat.

^ And honestly, I think that's the attitude that people need to go into a dining out experience with. The food 'hopefully' will be really good for the money paid, and you know in advance that your health isn't the prime concern.

IMHO, if you're looking for a healthy meal out, you're doing it wrong.

I'm not looking for healthy food in a restaurant. i'm looking for good tastes and yummy yummy yummy:D

i can do that at home easily for way less money than i spend getting food out.

my mum is great at cooking chicken. i'm good at cooking fish. we work as a team to make yum happen

^but when you do it at home, you're restricted by a lot of preconceived notions about a lot of the things you can add. If you poured the level of salt, sugar or fat onto it that many restaurants do, you'd be psyched out and wouldn't be able to eat it the same. Yet, when you get it in a restaurant, it's just "tasty".

i used to cook for africans at my last job (everyone had to cook the dinner if it was their turn) they will not eat anything without lots of salt. i'm surprised their kidneys function

i agree with what you are saying but i do notice when food has lots of salt/sugar it really obvious

okay i'll explain what i cooked last night

soy sauce (pearl river bridge naturally brewed-watch out out for those dodgy soy sauces banned in NZ etc.) honey, butter, garlic, small tomatos, red onions, olive oil, chilli paste, small drop of beer and sea bass. lemon juice on it when on plate. mashed potatoes with mature cheddar melted through it.

sexual

there was enough of what you need and it tasted sublime

I'm kinda curious, what's up with the "dodgy soy sauce"?

"Hydrolyzed Protein"=MSG? Is this true? The whole "meaty" flavor thing....Isn't that why MSG is used? "Umame"?

^thank you, that was very concise and informative! Perhaps a bit biased, but for the most part it was pretty good....
