Why are restaurant foods so dellicious?

I occasionally eat basically raw (very rare at best) steak, browned on the outside, but still cold in the center. I've never worried too much about it so long as the beef has been refrigerated up until the point I 'cook' it.

Truth be told I'm sure that's not safe, but I've never had any issue. I suspect some people just have a higher threshold for food born pathogens than others??

I always have my steak bleu which is basically what you're describing, warmed on the outside and completely tender and bloody on the inside. And anyway good quality beef can be eaten completely raw, have you ever had Steak Tartare? It is completely raw and absolutely delicious!

If you are paying less than 30$ for a feed then yes of course you are going to recieve shit. You get what you pay for and this is especailly true with food. If its cheap, dont buy it.. unless thats your thing. I dont eat out unless im going to drop some actual money. I can cook a professional quality meal for myself for cheaper than i can get a half assed unhealthy meal at some crappy joint, so ill do that. Something odd ive noticed is how many people order the same stuff everytime they go out or like, they will get something you can get everywhere else(a burger) when the restaurant specializes in steaks or whatever.. blasphemy!

Maybe you're not living in an area with a large number of communities of immigrants. In such areas, you can get numerous and varied types of food that you might not know how to cook (at least in such ways), with combinations of tastes you can't reproduce at home...

Auckland is a melting pot of every corner of the world we have a ridiculously diverse range of people and food's/restaurants.

I consider asian food for the most part 'peasant' food. Its usually made cheaply and with low quality ingredients, full of vegetable oil(soybean usually) and factory farmed meat, plus msg. The best asian food(vietnamese) ive had was cooked by a kitchen full of internationals.. mostly non-asian. Cost 70$ for me and a girl to have a decent feed. Was amazing, we had a some sort of squid in noodle soup and large prawns that had been battered in coconut and something green(i think a mixed herb paste) and fried. ohh just thinking about it now *drools*

i do that too- didn't know i could go full-raw, how is that safe? I usually just sear the outermost mm or two.

Never had Carpaccio bmx? Its raw beef(usually a quality cut like scotch or eye) thinly sliced(you freeze the whole piece of meat first) and served with a tiny drop of sauce(mayo sometimes). Its completely raw and taste sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo good. If you ever get the opportuntity, try it.

it is by far my favourite of the raw meat dishes ive tried.

...wow. i cooked so much crap yesterday and now you have me wanting right back in the kitchen. will be trying that verry soon, thanks.
though it will not have mayo anywhere near it.
Edit: too many "see also"'s on the bottom of that page, it's too much for me. never got into raw beef there's a lotta potential there, and i think my current affair w/ gourmet egg dishes has run its course. gg grab some beef in a second lol.
/damn you, am still feeling bloated from having, amongst many others, 7/8th's of a quiche last night..
//pops caffeine to prepare stomach

double-edit: just got a real nice 1.5lbs cut (and over a bill's worth of "perimeter" groceries, ie veggies/dairy/meat).
//pops more caffeine, turns freezer to coldest.

raw beef, carpaccio, steak tartare... im losing my appettite quickly. ugh.

I personally think my family's dinners taste better than restaurants because at my mom's place it is made with love. Not to mention she has clocked more time in the kitchen than most chefs have been alive.

nothing i have had in a restaurant has come close to food i have made for myself and my mum or my friends. i have specialities but at those i shit all over restaurants

I don't like most restaurant food. They usually add something to the food that disagrees with me.

Exactly!
I mean, I know what spices I like. I'm a picky eater. If a restaurant puts one spice or sauce or anything in my meal that I don't like, it just ruins the whole thing!
Also, I hate it when food touches. So if a restaurant puts all this food on my plate and makes it touch - ugh! I don't like it when it mixes aha!

I cant vouch for dodgy american meat, I eat 1st grade NZ beef and ive never had a problem with aging my steaks. I always do it and never have been sick. Im not saying let it turn brown completely but the edges should start to brown. Keeping it at a cold temperature(bottoms of the fridge) is ideal also.

Sounds like you just buy crappy beef though, generally if its prepared in a clean environment and is quality beef then aging it doesnt pose a problem. E coli. is not prominent in beef..

Hey Lord of the rings, I know NZ is the shit with it's "grass fed" beef and all, but America's a big country if you hadn't checked! You can get very high-quality food here if you're willing to pay, sometimes even for very cheap depending upon where you are! why is it the two things New zealanders always mention about their country are "grass fed beef" and "shitty roads"?!

Yeah, we have a lot of shitty food, but here's a lot of great food as well....you can find anything in America if you look hard enough, not just talkin about food!

Edit: sure, Mcdonalds is shit! It's all about making inferior ingredients taste better with salt and sugar etc! But salt and sugar and MSG only go so far....Those who know who good food know good, fresh ingredients!

There's about 4 Mexican restaurants within 1 mile of where I live now....The most expensive one probably has the best, freshest ingredients, but it's like $12 for a decent meal....My favorite one uses more traditional ingredients and cooking styles, the ingredients aren't as good but the preparation makes up for it!! It's only 6-7 bucks for a huge plate of food there!

If you're expecting the freshest ingredients possible everytime, you pay a premium!! A lot of times, people just don't cook the food as quick as it get delievered...Slow weeks, wtc....It's a waste to throw it away, but for $30 a plate you want the freshest food!

Our roads are shit but i've never mentioned how our cows are grass fed, ever, to anyone.

Anyway, you may have access to quality beef.. but ALL beef in my country is quality. I cant BUY shit stuff if i tried, dude. haha. And, if you are eating top quality beef in a restaurant.. guess where it probably came from? Ill give you a hint.. not 'big country'.

Anyway i am not trying to put america down or anything, but your beef standards are very low, and while you may be 'able' to get quality beef(which usually isnt grown in usa anyway) the majority of your beef is factory farmed, full of anti biotics, and of terrible quality.

I eat red meat almost everyday, and i love it. One of the reasons i never want to go near the united states, besides there horrible political policies and lack of respect for identity and personal information, is the low quality food you guys consume and are essentially forced to eat due to price differences.

i don't eat beef <snip>, I'm a vegetarian, except for occasional chicken and fish? Have you ever been here? probably not, we have "grass fed" beef and buffalo and all kinds of other shit too...You're about 20 years late criticizing the american beef/agricultural industry....That would be like me putting down Germany for Hitler, a lil bit late to the party! Sure we have a lot a fucked up shit, but also some of the best food you can get!<snip>

I'm not trying to be racist or nationalistic....America is very fucked up in many ways, but as far as variety of products and quality goes, you can get just about anything here....It's the same way with most free countries, but you can get good, authentic cuisine from anywhere in the world in the US....
You can criticize our greed and our politics, but you can't fuck with our availabilty of products dammit!

that's why we destroy the planet! convenience!

That's just factually wrong, especially when addressing someone from the Midwestern United States. We're practically drowning in Grade A beef around these parts.

We do have factory farms in the United states, I'm not denying that there is some F'd up shit going on in the Meat industry (necessitated, to a degree, by our large population), but there are PLENTY of quality options available. The US doesn't import beef for the most part (which is why any steaks labeled Kobe or Wagyu are bullshit) because we have more than enough available in domestic trade, so I'm not sure where your "big country" comment comes from (ignorance, I'm assuming).

You should tone down the Superiority Complex a bit.

Looks good, man. Especially that salsa (thanks for providing the recipe, I'm gonna make that tomorrow!)

it's good. i squeezed lime juice on the diced avocados (both for taste and preservation / oxidize-resistance) and then used rinsed lime pulp. worked real well.

^ One of my favorite things to add to salsas are homemade pickled habaneros - the spiciness mellows out and you get more of that delicious habanero smokiness. I much prefer these over Jalapenos, so here's a great recipe for it if you're interested.

Yeah the pickling mellows everything out a bit, but you still get the flavor! I like the juice too, but I'm weird!
