who's an amateur photographer here?? show your wares!!

I <3 film :)

I bought a canon eos 300 several months ago after debating for a long time about whether to get film or digital. Haven't had much of a chance to get out and play with it yet though.

Exceptional!

So, what do you guys think of the new Canon EOS 400D that comes out in a couple of days?

I've been thinking of getting a digital SLR for ages now, and with this almost out it looks like my procrastion has paid off! I'm also thinking of getting the EF-S 17-85mm f4-5.6 IS USM lens instead of the standard one. Reckon the (very high) extra cost would be justified?

depends... 400d has some nifty new features, like sensor cleaning (pretty rad), 10.2mp (pretty cool), 9 point autofocus (totally awesome) and a few other bits, but it's not THAT much more different than the 350d, which have reduced in price quite substantially.

in regards to the 17-85, depends if u want the Image Stabilisation of not. Would be quite handy if you don't have a tripod, but they're pretty expensive.

I was looking at that, and the Sigma 17-70 2.8 macro (which I ended up getting) It has an aperture of 2.8 @ 17mm, which is rad, and also macro mode which is fantastic (i'll post up pics soon) It doesn't have IS, but if you have steady hands/good technique/tripod, you can easily get around it.

My next purchase is the Canon 10-22 USM... mmm, ultra wide angle ;)

Welcome to the bottomless money-pit that is SLR ;)

Depends on how serious you plan to be. My advice is to stay clear of EF-S lenses or lenses those only fit Canon cameras with EF-S mounts. I foresee that this 400D model may well be the one of the last in the EF-S range, given that they have been introducing their true 35mm range slowly into the consumer range (eg. the 5D). Therefore when you upgrade in a few years time (because the integrated circuits and push buttons die) that an EF-S lens won't fit the later model cameras. The disadvantage of buying EF lenses is that they are zoomed in a heap more, but long term I think you'd be happy.

I bought the EF-S 17-85mm lens as my first lens and it was a big waste of money compared to my other three EF lenses. Let me get this clear, you do not need Image Stabilisation for a lens with such little zoom. The lens is very slow, f4 through to f5.6. To be honest for less money than what you are looking at, use the standard kit lens when you want to take wide angle shots and buy a Canon EF f1.8 50mm for portraits (fucking awesome lens for just $150) and a cheap EF 75-300mm (for those odd occasions you want to zoom). I'd extend to a macro lens later if you get serious.

As for the camera itself, it looks real good! I would buy it myself because my sensor gets filthy in just weeks from all the times I am changing lenses, but I want the next camera I buy to fully automate-able from the PC.

Good luck with whatever choice you make and have fun.

But if you want, I'll sell you my 350D with the EF-S 17-85mm lens and I'll use it to go towards buying the Canon 400D! :)

That's a really sweet shot. I've got to get into the habit of carrying the camera around with me, cos there's been a few times recently I've been sitting in traffic thinking that the view from the side mirrors is looking pretty good :)

^ I wish the sandcastle was mine ;)

A guy was building it at Manly. He said it takes about 5-6hrs to do.
