excellent movie deserving of it's own thread.

The film follows the mixed-breed dog Hagen who moves, along with his guardian Lili, in with Lili's father. Unwilling to pay a harsh "mongrel" fine imposed by the government, Lili's father abandons him. Determined to find Lili again, Hagen soon attracts a large pack of half-breed followers who start a seemingly organised uprising against their human oppressors.

like this review on RT said "Read it as a parable or as a horror movie. Read it as the story of love between a girl and her dog. Read it however you want."

i couldn't help but think of "The Birds" by hitchcock. there are some really beautiful scenes which i read didn't use any special effects, pretty amazing... the dogs should win an award imo =)

official bluray release july 28th

Magnolia Pictures has revealed that it will release on Blu-ray Kornel Mundruczó's film White God (2014), starring Zsófia Psotta, Sándor Zsótér, and Lili Horváth. The release will be available for purchase on July 28.

Very good movie, I ended up watching it in french with subtitles. I don't think it is available in the US in english yet. I read an article about the dogs used in the film I think there were over 200 dogs which they acquired from shelters and after the filming 98% of the dogs were adopted. The star dog (Hagen) was played by 2 sharpei/lab mixes called Bodie and Luke.

I would recommend.

Yeah I just watched it the other day, also with sub titles. I presumed was Hungarian but I'm not too sure, I didn't pay much attention, as I was reading the subbies.

Well.. It's rated R. 274 dogs were used in the making of this movie which is the world record for the most dogs used in a feature film. (from imdb)

As a dog lover it was hard to watch some parts (I wont spoil the plot) but I still enjoyed watching it.

I'd give it a 3 to 3.5/5 worth a watch.

The name 'white god' is pretty interesting, most of the way through I didnt know why they'd name it that, and thought it had something to do with the god dog word play. But after completion I think I have more of an idea why.

There is a thread on idb about it if anyone wonts to read more about others views.

definitely a Joe movie. saw it last night and was surprisingly disappointed. my review from the "Tell us ..." thread:

NSFW:
significant contrast between the subtle tone and stupid plot. there's a girl playing elle fanning's character from Somewhere -- coming of age girl temporarily pawned off on her distant, unprepared father because the divorced mother is going on a sudden, extended trip. the actress playing her, zsófia psotta, is adorable and talented. the surreal opening scene is captivating. and netflix thought i was going to give the movie buku stars.

so it was disappointing when the movie quickly began following a dog character around, showing his pixar movie adventures like befriending a smaller dog and escaping dopey animal control workers. before ending the movie reverts to back to the super surreal Holy Motors-feel of its opening scene -- plot comes full circle too -- and then thankfully finishes things off with a abstruse cut instead of making the audience sit around as it's neatly wrapped up.

the camera lusts after the pubescent actress playing the lead. repeated scenes of her dressing and undressing in her father’s studio apartment. wearing a wife beater to emphasize that it’s starting. she has a crush on an older boy, so growing up is definitely part of the theme. but it was still surprising how bold the film was in staring at her. it’s hungarian and i can’t think of any other films i’ve seen from hungary. not that any country isn't obsessed with the beauty of youth, but some are more open about it.

this movie didn’t work for me. i didn’t get its silly plot. and while i’m a new fan of zsófia psotta, too much of the movie is focuses on a dog instead of her. something must be lost in translation, because no idea why it is titled White God.

thanks for the link, poledriver and sharing your thoughts.

lol @ being a "joe movie" /me smiles proudly

going in, i was really rocking with a preconceived notion on the title and plot. so i see why you were disappointed. the "disney plot" comparison is definitely fair. disney plot, explicit animal cruelty, and... well you know reading on IMDB, i see people with different interpretations. i'm reading a review on IMDB and it is totally different than mine, more historical/european. that is the beautiful thing, depending on our own unique experiences we get something different out of it.

did this hip you to zsófia psotta ? i'm lookin on imdb, and it is empty af.

* o and i can picture you while watching this. i bet your worst nightmare is elle being cast in a shot for shot english language remake. like "enough with the friggin dog already" lol
