So I got some T. Bridgessii cuttings. Im planning on doing 12in soon. But i am confused as to what part of the cactus to eat? I peel some skin off and i see a dark green layer, followed by the inner light green/white-ish core. Do I just eat the dark green part? I cant imagine eating this whole thing.

You want the dark green layer under the waxy surface, outside of the core.

So that big 2nd layer? thats alot

you could prob do like the natives and slice it up and boil it in water for an hour or more and drink the tea. its gonna be nasty no matter what. your getting all the alkaloids not just mescaline so it will be a fuller experience but your gut is gonna be crazy. but eat it if you think your stomach will hold.

Just the smaller green layer. Just under the skin. The smaller circle in your picture.

so Im eating that and not the stuff in the bigger circle? someone a few posts up said I was supposed to eat the bigger circle, not the smaller

I'm not sure about the concentration difference, but I don't think there is an exact yes or no answer here. The inner core and spikes should (obviously) be removed but where you decide to "draw the line" seems like a grey area to me. If you have loads of cactus you might be more selective and only use the skin layer just under the fatty tissue, if you have only the one cactus you might be more inclined to use a part of the outer layer of inner tissue so to speak. I don't know if that would be 1/3 or 1/2 part but you get the idea.

Can anyone confirm and/or elaborate?

So I would actually eat the spineless skin? I thought the skin was just supposed to be discarded

The skin is made up from multiple layers just like our own skin is. With cactus consumption the transparant waxy layer is indeed discarded, that is the direct outer layer. But it's really just the top hull, you might not even count this as actual skin yet and I wouldn't be surprised if this is actually dead callus-like tissue. Under that the most dark green stuff begins which is what contains the good chemicals. Under that there is another layer that contains less alkaloids but is still good. Then there is the flesh that makes up the most of the cactus, my whole post was about the question whether it is truly devoid of alkaloids - it is probably still smart to eat parts of the pointy ridges but redundant to eat all of the inner flesh. The absolute core is useless, apparently.

I can't find a good cross section diagram, but here is an experience quote that may contain some handy info:

This is a brief description of my first two experiences with San Pedro, which occurred about two months apart. Both times, fresh SP cuttings about 2.5 feet in length were used. Preparation was simple: First, the spine nodes were snipped off, using wire clips. The next step was to cut the cactus lengthwise eleven times - along the tops and bottoms of the ridges, cutting down to the hard layer. This made the long sections easy to pull apart. Next the thin, waxy 'epidermal' outer layer which helps protect the cactus from the elements was removed using forceps; this waxy layer has been associated with nausea. It was tedious and time-consuming work getting rid of that waxy layer, but probably worth it.

Consumption: the green outer layer which is said to contain most of the alkaloids was then eaten raw, along with most of the soft pulp underneath. Taste was not a problem - bitter/sour, after the first few bites it tasted OK. Ate the cactus slowly and leisurely, on a fairly empty stomach, to avoid bloating. Took about 45 minutes to eat the entire thing. Effects came on much more quickly than expected - by the time all cactus material was consumed, strong body effects had already started. Both sessions were timed so as to finish eating the cactus around twilight. Both experiences lasted most of the night, with powerful visuals, and were very pleasant spiritual experiences! Absolutely no nausea or queasiness was felt during either of the sessions.

This is only the beginning. Such a complex and powerful experience will take many more sessions to evaluate :p San Pedro has been a very pleasant surprise! Stripping the spines and waxy layer, then simply eating it raw, seems the best way for me.

I think the outer layer is here incorrectly called "epidermal". The waxy stuff is apparently called the cuticle while the good green layer is the actual epidermis.

The green layer under the waxy-hard skin is were most of the good stuff is, if you have enough material, it's a good idea to cut the catus into seprate ribs, remove almost all of the white stuff (just cut it away with a paring knife) then scrape the green stuff away from the waxy-hard skin with a spoon. This is way easier then trying to peel the skin away!

Then just eat all the greenish stuff that you scraped away (which will be kind od muckey by this time) and your good to go.

This will not get all the good stuff like if you use more of the white stuff, but is alot easier to hold down, and if you can't hold it down, then whats the point of using a more conservative method?

i've never had the patience to try to isolate that layer of cactus flesh. time consuming...prickly. i gave up and used the whole thing.
have always put chunks of cactus into the blender and ground them into cactus snot. having said this, i've not really had the best experiences with it...
next time i will be trying an a/b extraction.
