Im currently taking centrum... In your guys' opinion which multivitamins do you think are the best to get the most vitamins??? or are they all pretty much the same???
I agree with Mysterie, fruits and veggies are great sources of vitamins. You need not take a multivitamin unless you know you're not getting your RDI from food.
If you think you need one, look for multivitamins that contain highly bioavailable forms of vitamins. Buying each vitamin on its own is even better.
Centrum is awful. It usually has too much iron in it for the average person, and the vitamin panel it contains all come from industrial elements, not food based vitamins. In general, manufactured vitamins are not healthy. You can read a decent review of this problem here. Although I don't support western medicine's almost complete ignorance of nutrition as the primary way we heal, I also think the natural health industry's insistence on vitamin use is controversial.
Basically, if your vitamins and minerals are not food sourced, you are unlikely absorbing more than 1%, and the remainder has to be harshly processed by the body. Some people have liver and kidney overburden and they think that taking vitamins is helping their body get more done, when really all it's doing is giving the liver a substance at concentrations it would never normally encounter, which only makes the physical burden worse.
Vitamins and minerals in food form are already converted to useable nutrition by the plants and animals they came from, so they are far more bioavailable. So... if you really must take a pill, get one that says it is naturally sourced from food.
Im taking quest atm and used to take centrum. I love quest cause i noticed that i havent had a single zit grow on my face when i started taking this vit.
I take Green Source multivitamins, which are all derived from natural foods. I don't know if they actually help my health or not - I've taken them for many years, and I can't exactly compare my health now to what it would be if I hadn't used multivitamins. They make me feel better about my health for sure though.
Besides, unless you're a nutrient freak, who keeps track of individual nutrient intake? You might be eating plenty of whole grains and vegetables, but what if all the ones you've been eating this week are short in 1 or 2 particular vitamins or minerals? I think a multivitamin is a good way to ensure you've covered everything all the time.
I think a major pitfall with multivitamins is to start eating junk food all the time and think that a pill will take care of your nutrition. Doing that is definitely less healthy than eating right without any supplements.
