which mp3 player to own and why, your take on it

btw i was trying the headphone that came with my player recently and wow !! how do people stand those,
cuz they dont know any better right, cuz i remember using those "came with the player" types back in the days of walkman and highschool and wow ....
anyway if you are using crappy headphone that doesnt fit, PLEASE UPGRADE !! you'll thank yourself later on :)

I saw this in a descripton of the classic ipod..

"Use the Click Wheel to adjust volume, navigate songs, browse in Cover Flow, or explore the Music menu by playlist, artist, album, song, genre, composer, and more. Want to mix things up? Click Shuffle Songs. iPod classic makes your music look as good as it sounds, thanks to its big, bright, color display."

And I've used my friends older one, I don't understand what you mean by it dosen't support folder browsing. I could search my friends ipod by artist or song, I didn;t bother with the genra thing, that was some stupid shit there I admit.

I use folder browsing on my pc cause i usually dl full albums or live shows, and listen to them by folder with VLC media player, after just having a long list of single songs in no particular order, folder browsing is the shit, I just don't get how being able to choose by artist or album isn't folder browsing minus the click and open folders.

Can someone fill me in on the diffrence? I've looked around and I can't find a large one (40-80 GB) that has the so called folder browsing, and also supports FLAC and .shn files, which dosen't matter too much to me cause I usually convert the flacs or shorten files of live shows to decent quality mp3, which makes them about 1/2 or 1/4 of the size they'd be originally.

I'm looking around the review sites now, but I haven't even seen a review that mentions folder browsing.

I have the iPod Nano 3rd generation! :D It's very well designed, I didn't like the design of the 2nd generation Nano, but the 3rd generation Nano looks way better. It's also amazingly small and light, I couldn't believe it at first when I held it in my hand, and it can even play video's of TV quality, that thing is just amazing :)

I have the silver one:

If you access your ShitePod as a mass storage drive via windows - probably using an open-source application - you'll find (as I did) that it doesn't store it's files in a manner in which normal USB devices would. They're stored by artist.

By folder browsing, people are referring to the ability to copy the existing file structure of your music folder on your computer's hard drive, directly over to the media player... then browse it in the way you would normally. Ipod doesn't do that.

yeah and for me for instance if i record myself (i play music) and make a folder with all my stuff it aint gonna have any id3 tag attach to it, so no name for the artist, or song title.....or anything (no way to find my stuff via tags)

like this :

on a ipod i couldn't find that song
i couldn't find folder "x"

btw i was listening to Handsome Boy Modeling School yesterday and someone decided to put : porn groove for genre,, hehe
if you like gorillaz check it out : The truth

oh and archos used to use the files-folder type of navigation maybe you should check them out
but sadly not much competition or i should say choice to choose from these days in the hard drive player market (if you aint in for a pmp (personal media player))

GlassAss420 did you need more info ? or anything else :)

i like to surf this site from time to time to keep in i-thouch with whats going on in dap land : http://www.dapreview.net/news.php

Picking an mp3 player was so much simpler before I read this post...

I know what you mean. I listened to my player for a minute before I turned it off, went back to the store and bought better headphones. There was absolutely NO fucking bass in the ones that came with them. I left them laying in the parking lot of Wal-Mart to make some cheap bastard's day.

80gb ipod video classic. im a musician and no other mp3 player has the storage space i require. Also, there's so many little attachments you can get for it. Most notably the iTalk, a decent quality stereo mic with a line in for a better mic, if you own one. it can record hours of audio. I use it for recording vocals on-the-go. its like a portable recording studio, minus the editing. I bring the vocals home and edit them on my computer. its also useful for recording lectures and notes-to-self.

My professional organisation sells Ipods at cost, as well as sending alot of Continuing Education podcasts. Long story short it means Ipods at cost that I can then claim as a tax right off.

My question is, what do I do with all my music that is stored in windows, sony soundstage etc.. How hard is it to just flick it across to the Ipod? Or do I have to download all my songs again from originals CD?

What sort of adaption do I need to connect through my AV receiver to play through my home threatre set up?

My ipod's pretty much breaking, so I should figure out what kind of replacement I want. Here are my desired/required features:

Good sound quality
Will play flac and ogg vorbis
solid-state memory (I anticipate a great deal of jostling and falls to occur)
drag and drop interface / intuitive file system (ie, not ipodesque scrambling...or something that may easily be hacked)
microphone in, cd (redbook) quality recording, preferably on-the-fly mp3/etc. encoding
(I'm pretty happy with my ipod's attachment for this, but it would be a nice feature to have built in.)
storage capacity may be small, say ~10 gigs
durable (ideally, I shouldn't need to purchase an aftermarket case)
as cheap as possible

Straight up, i own an 30 gig zune.
I think its quite fantastic. I've had only 2 Major malfunctions with it.
all of which were fixable at future shop.

Unlike Ipods which seem to be disposable more or less.
I know more firends whoa re on their 3rd or 4ths Ipod, meanwhile I'm still using
a First generation 30gig Zune.

When I was like 13 my parents got me a Sansa player for Christmas, and the damn thing froze all the time to where I'd have to unscrew the battery panel, take it out, put it back in, and screw the panel on. 8)

I've had an iPod nano (8 gig) for the past few years, and I love it. The silver looks sleek, it doesn't freeze, the battery life is great, and I can use MediaMonkey to upload music, or even use my boyfriend's Mac. Plus you can get all the accessories like the wall charger (amazing).

Edit: And it's pocket size! :P

Cowon iAudio 7 fits your bill perfectly. You can get the 16GB for $135

I'm going to bite the bullet and make the purchase today or thereabouts.
The cowon d2 and iaudio7 appear to be going for roughly the same price.
Anyone have strong preferences for either?

zune 2 is where it's at, i've had a couple of mp3 players before hand but this particular one is my favorite by far. excellent hardware, interface and setup. the zune software puts itunes to shame once you got it configured too, i recommend it above the others by far

I got a Creative Labs Zen that I'm very happy about - good sound and video quality, reliable, FM radio included. The newer models are all solid state memory and also work with SDHC cards. In general you should check the Amazon reviews when making a decision, there are heaps of them.

I have to agree with this. I have owned a few iPods in the past as well as a Creative Labs Zen (One of the old ones that looked like a gigantic brick). The Zune 120gig's touch pad interface is far superior, in my opinion, to the iPod's click wheel and much more sensitive. The way the Zune categorizes music in its menu scheme seems more intuitive and easier to navigate through when I'm choosing which genre, artist, or individual song I want to play in my music library.

I also love the Zune's huge glass screen that is highly scratch resistant. The screen and outer casing of the Zune might get some finger smudges on it, but the screen is bright enough where you don't even notice. It's also a huge plus that the Zune is pretty scratch proof and it doesn't get torn to shit from the moment you touch it like most iPods.

I also agree that the Zune's software beats iTunes hands down.

I love plugging the Zune into my 360 and playing the music through my TV with full screen visualizations.
