The obvious answer is VI and VII, + Tactics.

I is the inaugural classic, deficient on so many things from today's point of view, but it had a vision, solid difficulty and surprising good balance. The game that started it all. Four Warriors indeed.

II was ambitious but broken. The level up system is totaly fubar and inconsistent, which ruins an otherwise good game.

III was one of the best RPGs for the NES. Good music, surprising long, defined the class system, some good humor, and beware, it's very, very tough. Probably the toughest in the entire serie in fact. From 7+ it has been mainly walks through the parks targeted at the mainstream, so "new" gamers are in for a shock. It had summons, ninjas, sages, extremely hard last level. Definetely worth the nostalgia trip, with a patched (english) rom.

IV redefined the serie, and is something unique. The graphics were not really "next-gen" for the snes, but the game delivered on all the other accounts. Unique and engaging characters, in the Top 3 for music in the serie, fast gameplay, hard hitting ennemies. It might not have the depth of the other games with the limited skills and system, but IV is, for lack of other word, the most "rememberable", unique and refreshing game of the serie. Fast summons, a dark night turning Paladin, treason and redemption, and then going to the f**cking moon fight bad ass bosses to get awesome weapons, and leveling up to get to the red hot core of the moon. How awesome is that? Some games have the X factor, the unexplainable magic, attirance, they are greater than the sum of their part. IV is the perfect example.

V was interesting, good job system, but felt less compelling and engaging with the generic vilain and less developped characters. The music was good but not like 4 and 6. Good, varied gameplay, good humor and definetely the "Square" factor in there, but the game is the weakest of the 3 on Snes.

VI is THE classic, with plot, characters and pure gameplay unsurpassed in the serie, plus probably the best music too. The game was so balanced, enjoyable, mature, complex but easy to grasp. Make your own party, great skills, big inventory, characters unique AND customizable, the world destroyed turning to Ruin. The fights were quick and enjoyable, the characters lovable, human and tragic. VI is considered, and will always be remembered as the pure "classic" final fantasy, the apotheosis of all the love and experience Square had gathered so far. The translation by Ted Woosley was the best in the serie, probably. Magistral and timeless. Here is the point where Square started to drop the difficulty level to go mainstream, but the challenge was still good.

VII is the "new gen" classic, which has redefined the serie. Music is great but not as good as VI, plot interesting but kinda confusing and written with less skill, loading time + some repetitive fights really slowed the pace down, and the difficulty level was disappointing for old school gamers, but the overall package, FMWs, great villain, scope and innovation make it a classic too. The Hype was incredible, and on most accounts the game delivered.

VIII was boring, much too slow, long ass summons, stupid teenagers etc. Really pushed the "minigame" concept too far. Felt like a chore to play through.

IX was, like had been said, bright and enjoyable, a bit simplistic and the last part did not deliver. A solid effort though.

Can't comment on 10, 11 and 12.

Tactics is an acquired taste, very tough, very complex and very long, but the quality of the game, balance, music and story is very, very high. Square showed us they could deliver a dark anc deep story packaged in a recognizable package. A classic too.

I hope XIII will be great and not too targeted at the mainstream.

Simple question: why not, from the get-go, allow gamers to choose their difficulty level? Change from the default "cakewalk" of 7+ and allow a hard setting?

I also don't see how the interface of snes games (like V and VI) can be considered more "clunky" than VII or VIII, since they are basicaly the same. Fights are: press up or down to choose action, then action button or select through a list of spells which you can order to your wish. Press a button to go to menu, choose from one of many actions to do etc. Really, the "interface" hasn't changed, only the name of the actions did.

hhmm...I think I have to disagree with you on one point here. Tactics was only hard if you didn't ever stop and gain a few jobs and levels with your characters. But once you learned and understood the benefits of a few jobs...the game became ridiculously easy...and also quite tedious to get to that point.

the game indeed got easier with the good combinations. Maybe my memory is affected by my first playthrough with an unbalanced team, indeed.

I'm currently replaying FF6 on my DS, and I'm struck by how much Jules Verne and other industrial revolution era sci-fi writers would have liked this game.

It's a comprehensive work of art. The story, as far as games go, is top tier. But we can't forget the reason that the game even made it to that list - FF6 creates complex emotional reactions that are the results of many, many elements expertly crafted together. (I hope you're playing it with headphones).

Give it a chance, it's really subtle and definitely a departure from 7 as far as initial excitement goes. For replay-to-death value (like 12 times and up), however, 8 is better than VII and VI imo. Its subtlety is actually one of its greatest assets. And as for the summons being long, once you have Boost it's like they're not long enough - trying to break the record for most button-presses is a neverending game. And there are mad fucking secrets and many different ways to create "best characters" whereas in VII it was simple: quad cut + added effect contain + added effect diablo, etc.

8's biggest flaw was that it wasn't orgasmically exciting from the first second, like 7 but imo 8's plot is much more interesting and layered.

All my praise for 8 comes from my complete dedication to and mastery of it; most of my FF-worshipper friends can't understand why it's the only one I'll still play... but I'm always trying to convert them.

You fucking nailed it.

Terra's Theme is one of only two songs I've ever heard that sends a certain distinctive tingle through my cheeks and down through my neck and shoulders (the other is the refrain to Bjork's 'All Neon Like')

Before you said this, I was ashamed to admit I'd ever gotten a lump in my throat while playing a video game. But yeah, this game has a lot of touching moments.

It does lend itself to comparisons outside of other video games. When I try to describe the way it makes me feel, I come up with all kinds of weird mental associations between David Lynch movies and old Smashing Pumpkins songs like "Through the Eyes of Ruby." I have all of Bjork's stuff by the way, she's basically out of this world (giving that song a listen to right now).

Oh man...I couldn't agree with you more really. FF8 is what got my wife hooked on video games with me and now...she is quite the gamer. We put well over 200 hours in to FF8 between two run throughs. It's her absolute favorite...and I love 8 as well. There were so many different ways to pair up the weapon combos and the summons. It was awesome. And you could turn the summons to the short animation for those that thought they were too long. ahahaha. You don't find as many lovers for FF8...but it's nice when you do. Another thing I loved was the card game. We spent hours and hours trying to track down all the best cards so we could have the best deck. Was it a waste? Yeah...maybe...but it was damn fun :D

It's really hard to find people that appreciate 8, true. Any game following 7 was bound to be under some incredible scrutiny, and 8 didn't go for any up-front, in-your-face awesomeness. VII, on the other hand, could engage almost anyone that played it from the first second.

Sorry to derail, but who loved chrono cross? That's the best rpg I've ever played.

We'll accept the derailing since Chrono Trigger is widely considered as beeing one of the top Square game ever, along VI and VII. :)

oh man this thread makes me wanna bust out my ps1. i got a mod chip in it and everything. my favorites are definitely 7 and 9. i like 8, but i never really got into it that much, only beat it 2 times.

FFVII for me.
it'll just always have it's place in my mind since it was the game that made me first realize that RPG's don't all suck.
the only RPG i'd played before it was illusion of gaia. keep in mind, i'm a fighting game fan, so i usually need to be fucking something up at all times.

strangely enough FFVII got me wrapped up in the story enough to not really notice.
the music was also phenomenal btw.

agreed wholeheartedly.

i also LOVED FF10; but am yet to meet someone who agrees.

...kytnism...:|

FF7, it seems to have been covered thoroughly in this thread already. Even when you've done EVERYTHING else, the Golden Saucer is always open. I've played that snowboard game way too many times...and it was such a small part of the game.

The music was also the most memorable.

And chasing 'the Man in the Black Cape' and finding out the back story and seeing it unfold...brilliant!

FF8, first time I played I thought it sucked, stopped after awhile. Truthfully, I had a very poor grasp of the game. Played through a few years later and it was awesome! It was a little more technical than others with junctioning magic and modifying weapons, but really fun to play through. Fairly challenging at points too.

FF10 was also good, though I think I like FFXII for third.

Is FF X-2 any good?

I just got a PS2.......and its the first gaming system I've owned since the original Nintendo :)

I've played FF7 on my PC and enjoyed it............. that's about the extent of my FF experience.....
