I have taken Xanax(sticks) only like 4 times now but i take one like once every 2 weeks.
My friend told me that I'm stupid and I shouldn't be taking them, but she smokes like 4 cigarettes a day.
I'm trying to tell her that what she's doing is worse but she doesnt believe me

Can you guys please help!!!! :?

You can't even compare that, cigarettes are worse for your body but will let you keep your cognitive function and memory. With prolonged use xanax just makes you dumber, plain and simple.

There is no harm when taking xanax occasionally for anxiety or recreation. Just don't dose a dangerous amount and it isn't dangerous.

Cigarettes are worse.

Addiction for addiction, a tobacco addiction is more damaging to a persons health than a benzo addiction. Again though, this can depend on the severity of addiction to a particular benzo. If you are getting your arms or legs amputated because of a benzo addiction (like seen with the temazepam epidemic back in the 80's and 90's) then a benzo addiction would be worse. Overall though, far more people die because of tobacco caused damage to the heart and lungs. I don't see alprazolam being as damaging to the body than tobacco is. Benzo withdrawals would be more dangerous, though.

is this question really being asked?

doctors prescribe xanax. do they prescribe cigarettes? no.

now you tell me what's worse for your health.

Yeah, cigarettes can kill you after 30 years of smoking, but Xanax can cause you immediate trouble if you take too much with alcohol, black out, and end up in jail...

Yeah cigs are certainly more unhealthy in the grand scheme of things, but Xannies can be dangerous when combined with other drugs (especially alcohol).

But if you take Xans as they are prescribed, cigs are worse

but as others have said.... apples and oranges really

Not really. Cigarettes are ALWAYS bad for your health. Xanax CAN be bad for your health as can any drug.

Medically speaking benzos do very little physical damage to your body, even if you are on high doses long term. Cigarette smoking however causes lung and other cancers, emphysema, bronchitis, heart disease, peripheral vascular disease etc etc..

Benzos however can be fatal in overdose if taken with other CNS depressants (or more rarely alone). They can also be fatal if you stop taking them abruptly causing a seizure.

Just thinking about the physical effects doesn't take into account the psychological effects of having a benzo addiction or of long-term benzo use though, and benzo use can cause memory problems and other cognitive issues as well.. it is hard to compare the two I agree. Cigarette smoking does cause more physical harm than taking benzos however, especially in the long-term.

I wouldn't like to say what the risks of 4 cigarettes a day are compared to occasional benzo use, but if you can keep your use to that level (not always easy at all) then your use is pretty safe. The key is not to keep increasing your dose and taking them more often, it can be a slippery slope.. also not to combine them with other CNS depressants such as alcohol or opioids in case you overdose.

This is a terrible argument.

Aether couldnt agree more, you realise some drugs are only tested for 6-8 weeks before they are given to the public, meaning we are the guinea pigs, and the big pharma companies push a drug to be public as quickly as possible to maximise profits.

Drs also use to rx fenphen (phenfen?) Anyway, that turned out to be lethal. Use to rx Yaz, again ended up lethal.
Just bc it's on a rx paper doesn't mean it's safe. You do realize *most* drs are in the back pocket of big pharmas, right?
Terrible argument/stand.

lol xanax ofc, you moron.

Comparing personal suffering, drug induced or not, really doesn't make any sense though. Tell a guy who lost his legs that he should be glad to not have lost his sight or hearing lol. Same goes for the xanax/tobacco comparison. Dying a slow horrible death of COPD, emphysema or lung cancer surely isn't much fun, but not knowing where you passed out last night or why you woke up bruised at the bottom of the staircase isn't either. Neither is a grand mal seizure lol. Anyway, good night!

Lol your friend is SO gonna go "I told you so" in 10 years. :D

Crook i read a story of someone on AusDD who got addicted to Xanax and had to stop abruptly and had a grand mal seizure so dont talk like its not a possibility, you obviously dont know much about benzos if you dont know seizures are one of the many possible withdraw symptoms.

Baby gurl is actually right, if you care to watch my youtube video I posted (it is an hour and a half long) but you will learn alot. I dont agree with everything they say, but they show proof doctors and psychiatrists get paid alot of money by the pharmas to push these drugs onto people.

Just to name a few from a quick google search:

Not in the UK they don't, doctors here can't even get a free pen from a drugs rep anymore and with it all being publically funded there is no advantage to the doctors or their practices if they prescribe a certain drug..

Agreed that prescribed =/= safe, look at thalidomide etc - there are more checks and balances these days but it's not guaranteed and a lot of drugs have risky side effects - a good doctor balances these against the benefits, and discusses it thoroughly with the patient, but not all do sadly.

Grand mal seizures are definitely a real risk if you stop Xanax suddenly. Benzos don't have physically damaging side effects in themselves (like cigarettes do) but yes, you can overdose/injure yourself/have a seizure when you stop/affect your cognitive function with them.

Comparing the two is not at all easy but I would still say that smoking daily is probably going to do you more harm than occasional benzo use, the risks of smoking are well-documented in the literature, unless you become benzo-dependent.
