Where do all the old drugs go?

This question is aimed primarily at anyone who has worked at a pharmacy or perhaps has a friend that worked at a pharmacy.
How do pharmacies go about disposing of their out dated medications?
I always thought it would be a little too doomingly easy if they just threw them in their dumpster or what not.

Incinerated in hot kilns that have to be a certain temperature in order to dispose (poof, into smoke) all of the material.
I used to work near cement kilns. The cops would take all of the material from drug busts and I had to watch in agony as it went up in ashes.

If the kiln's are hot enough how do they know they are really burning drugs? That means someone has to be the last one to cheak them out and they are probably reselling them on the street.

what if they dumped like a couple hundred kilo's of some marijuana in the incenerator and the smoke gets caught by a breeze and gets swept over the city, getting everybody high. haha im just kidding :D

The original poster was making a reference to expired pharmaceuticals. A friend told me that they simply flush the pills down the toilet. I'm assuming that they don't give this order to a pharmacy tech when dealing with CIIs. A tear trickles down my eye when I think of all the OC160s collecting dust on pharmacy shelves everywhere, just waiting for the computer to expire them. C'mon people. If given the opportunity.. please.. in the honor of pill poppers everywhere... steal them while you can. Jesus, imagine having 16,000mgs of oxycodone at your disposal.

Anything like oxy probably turns over way to fast to expire in anywhere but the most remote pharmacies.

Expired pharmacuticals are sent back to the distrbuter for as refund, they are then destroied ... pharmacies NEVER just throw away or flush stuff like that...

Droop: Too many appetite surpressing drugs?
I am sure there are many points along this process where pharmaceutical drugs can and are diverted. Though as I mentioned before popular items probably aren't going to expire in quantity.
Organized crime is doing its part to keep america high by diversion of pharmaceuticals I am sure.

I'd post the address of a pharmacy still holding an untouched bottle of 100 count OC160s, but that would be against forum guidelines.
These big dark-blue pills from heaven were discontinued, so Doctors don't prescribe them anymore. I'm guessing that there should be some at a lot of local drug stores. What a heart-breaking waste.
