Where did mephedrone come from, then?

Hello, I've been thinking, where did mephedrone come from?

it's been confusing me for a while, no one ever knew about the shit, then it came out of the blue and ate Europe. So what happened?

Mephedrone was first synthesised in 1929 but did not become widely known until it was rediscovered in 2003. By 2007 mephedrone was reported to be available for sale on the internet, by 2008 law enforcement agencies had become aware of the compound and by 2010 it had been reported in most of Europe, becoming particularly prevalent in the United Kingdom. Mephedrone was first made illegal in Israel in 2008, followed by Sweden later that year. In 2010 it was made illegal in many European countries and in December 2010, the EU ruled it illegal across Europe. -Wiki

I don't know this for a fact, but what I heard was this. They don't really know exactly when it was first synthesized or where. Laboratory origins are still unclear. It is derived from cathinone, which is actually found in the 'khat' plant. Mephedrone, or 4-MMC is a derivative of cathinone. Many people speculate its origins were somewhere in the middle east. It began popping up in various places in Israel around 2005.

It is hard to say where it definitely came from first. It has definitely only been around for [recreational use] less than 10 years, though.

This probably won't generate much thought-provoking discussion, but i'll leave this here for a bit and see if anyone more knowledgeable can shed some light.

It started being mass distributed in Israel as pre-packaged legal party pills. After that I can only assume it was identified via GC/MS and then started becoming mass produced in china. the rest is history..

amapola, MCAT is methcathinone, not mephedrone. 4-MMC (4-methylmethcathinone) is mephedrone.
Thanks for the clarification! I'm not up to date on all the RC's (especially stims) and I've definitely heard mephedrone referred to as MCAT before. It was probably some bogus news report or something though.

edit:
haha I just typed it into google and Wikipedia has MCAT as a slang name for mephedrone sourced from a BBC news article. Somebody with an account go correct that eh.

mcat was originally slang for methcathinone but like most slang it got bastardized to mean something else in certain scenes. at least they aren't calling it "meow meow"

The UK media was responsible for many of the names of 4-MMC, mephedrone. "Meow-Meow" seems like a natural variation (or something) from MCAT, even though MCAT is a different drug altogether, as has already been mentioned.

However, the media, in the UK, the US and elsewhere, isn't always right when it comes to identifying common drugs, let alone research chemicals/designer drugs.

I know that biorepublik started them off with neo doves, then they were analysed by someone that posted here, and hen it all went mental.

but where did the idea to sell neo-doves come from, i suppose is my question?

MDMA is an easy enough drug to plot: Merck/hippies/shulgin/dallas group/starck club/ibiza/amnesia.

but mephedrone? come on! we must be able to work it out between us here. ;-)

Hopefully the fact that this is now in Drug Culture will help.

Bluelight should start a project to trace the beginnings of all these designer drugs if you ask me, I'm sure many of them have quite interesting stories behind them...

Its essentially a cathione analogue. From what I can gather, someone took methcathione, an old anti-depressant (turns out a stimulant isnt an anti-d tho) from the Soviet Union in the 30's and 40's that was made illegal in the US in '94.

Look

This is Mephedrone: 2-methylamino-1-(4-methylphenyl)propan-1-one

This is Methcathione: 2-(methylamino)-1-phenyl-propan-1-one

Designer drugs ftw
