usually between 1/4 tank and E, the gauge is closer to E at this point in time; i'll probably fill up tonight or tomorrow.

i use 87 octane and 1 tank usually lasts me anywhere from 7-10 days depending on how much i drive. i normally use public transportation to/from work and i'm in the car a total of < 30 min/day unless i need to run errands or drive to a friend's house. i live in L.A. so i try to spend the least amount of time possible driving. i also live in the downtown area of my city so almost everything is within walking distance which comes in handy since my apartment building has street parking only.

My last 2 vehicles were SUV's I got into the habit of filling up at a 1/4 in fear that it would drop to the E and I would be left stranded. With my new Impreza, I can drive 25 minutes with the gas light on....not that I make a habit out of it.

You know you're supposed to always use the octane your engine is built for? If not, it throws the timing off. Bigger isn't always better =)

not 100% true

you ARE supposed to use the right gas for you engine but it does not throw off the timing. thats incorrect.

lower octane (87) has less detergents and additives which means it actually burns hotter and produces a bigger explosion then higher octane (93)

the problem is, if you have a high performance engine and use low octane the larger amount of heat is likely to produce hot spots in the cylinder or on the spark plug and these hot spots will cause the fuel being injected to ignight prematurely. "preignition" or sometimes described as "pinging" creates an audible sound and can damage our engine.

using higher octane then recommended is not likely to cause damage since the additives and detergents will help lubricate and cool the cylinder.

just dont use 87 if the car is designed for premium! or if you have a turbo car

so wait. since the gauge goes down slower for the first half-tank, do you actually use less gas? or the same amount all the time, but the gauge goes down faster for the last quarter tank, like some sorta crazy CrAzY clock?

i've always been wondering that...

You may have noticed how your gauge tends to stay on full for quite a while after filling up. When your tank is full, the float is at its maximum raised position -- its upward movement is limited either by the rod it's connected to or by the top of the tank. This means that the float is submerged, and it won't start to sink until the fuel level drops to almost the bottom of the float. The needle on the gauge won't start to move until the float starts to sink.

Something similar can happen when the float nears the bottom of the tank. Often, the range of motion does not extend to the very bottom, so the float can reach the bottom of its travel while there is still fuel in the tank. This is why, on most cars, the needle goes below empty and eventually stops moving while there is still gas left in the tank.

Floater-Between E and the orange below E

Usually wait until it gets near E, but my gas tank has a floating gauge, so I hurry my ass up and pray I make it to the station cause the bitch WILL leave me walkin'(shit ain't fun). Dunno whether it is because I am a procrastinator or because it is so fuckin' cold up here I don't wanna freeze my ass off while waiting on the slow-ass preset bullshit.
But since the price has dropped/fluctuated lately I atleast get 20 bucks worth, but for some reason it seems to last longer and run better if I fill it up...shit I will eventually need it anyway, guess the procrastination kicks in again.;)

I reckon my car will go 50 miles below E, and I test that out as I always like to clock the tank on the trip clock.

It's cool now, £45 fills the tank compared to £67 a few months ago.

^ How often do you have to re-fill the tank? I realize the Euro is stronger than the Dollar but that still sounds really expensive to me. It costs me $25 or so to refill a completely empty tank.

Petrol/Gas is ridiculously cheap in the US compared to most counrties in Europe.

I am not sure how much you guys pay for a gallon (I think a gallon is 4L)

But petrol sold by the litre here is about 90p sterling at the moment. It was upwards of £1.18 a few months ago:X

I can get 350 miles from a tank on the motorway, cruising. But in the city where I do most of my driving I get 200 if lucky:|

I so happy that gas went down in the US. I paid $1.79/gallon this morning.
I never complained when I was paying over $4 and driving a SUV. I am Canadian and high gas prices are a way of life.

I'm not sure what it's like in other countries (I assume there is a similar situation) but in Australia, fuel is cheaper on Tuesdays and Wednesdays (generally).
So I fill up on those days, regardless of how full/empty my tank is.

i am a massive procrastinator and now, i am lucky enough to have a fuel gage thingie that tells me how many miles i have, so when it gets to ten miles left, i stop being lazy and pull over. i rarely fill it up. i am too impatient.

^^ Do want! That is very handy indeed.
I have (thankfully) yet to ever completely run out of petrol but I've certainly pushed it about as far as it could go...a number of times :)
