I was just wonderin yalls take on this....when do you think you make the switch from a user to a addict? What is the signs for you? where is the line between the two? I aint sayin your theory in general, but that would also be acceptable. but i was wonderin for your own personal use of shit, when do you say "Aight....shits gettin a lil overboard." Maybe not necessarily that youre a ADDICT, but maybe that its time to cool it a lil bit. A example might be "when I start missing work or sleepin thru my alarm and ending up hours late for , cuz of the drugs i did the night before, I know i should lay off."

So....What yall think?

Ill be back later to put in my 2.

That's a tricky one.

-physically dependant
-Psychologically dependant
-Functional addict
-Dysfunctional addict
-Binge user (acute)
-Constant user (chronic)
-Chaotic user (unconciously self destructive)
-(Para) Suicidal user (conciously self destructive/attention seeking)

Man, I could make a list as long as my arm and not repeat all the subset of drug users (although, of course, so is alcohol). Lacey, this could end up as a LONG list of people or even shouting (along with the usual flaming & associated threats)...

Excellent thread idea, methinks.

Sean

I was curious your peramaters for your how you control your own drug use and what signs that you personally notice for yourself, that you should stop or be easy on it. but those are some good ones to start, but also very vague.

Another example...I know im usin too much OC's when I cant have them without doing them or constantly thinking of doin them.

Thanks BTW...hope you contribute more...

^^^I can really only speak of weed as the others I have tried I have always done once and forgotten about taking soon afterwards as I have an addictive personality. I treat those times as special.

As for weed...I realize I've entered a grey area when smoking has gone from a "should I do it" to "when am I gonna do it" in my head. I am known for binges and than long fasts due to this definition.

good input so far. i agree on the fact that once the bad out weighs the good and when you run out of $ and fiend out. but also when it stops being fun and becomes a necessary thing to not feel like total shit. i know the first time i started to feel physically ill from not doing any oxy for 2 days, i was like wtf is happeneing...i went out and got an 80, and i felt fine. right then i knew i had fucked up

financial priority would be one for me. eg: i should be saving / spending my money on this but instead i'll buy another (insert amount) of (insert drug).

Interesting topic but...

I don't know about other people, but when I try to decide if I'm an addict, I just take the "who gives a damn" attitude.

So I'm a junky. What difference does it make.

i was addicted to coke. i think i became an addict when i disappeared for a few days, left my daughter and husband, and drained all the money out of our bank account. i was out of control and all i could think about was the high (looking back, the high wasn't even that good to begin with)

when i ran out of money, i came back to my husband. we had several hard weeks together, and i went to rehab and then counseling. finally, our lives are back in order and we are extremely happy.

and as for the questions "where do you draw the line", i dont think addicts can draw the line. thats why they're addicts.

No i mean where is the line between addiction and use , for you?

Like, at what point do you cross over from a user to a addict.

Like "I was usin alot of blow, but when i started doin it in the morning before work cuz without it i was too tired, thats when i realized i turned into a addict."

for everyone its different. Also alot of times it aint one thing, its a gradual shift so usually its many "signs" that you would notice. But usually there is a point where it dawns on you "damn....I aint a casual user no more."

I wasnt sayin "where do you draw the line" as in where do you stop cuz obviously if your a addict you DIDNT draw a line.

man enough of that shitty phrase.

that was such a blurry time for me i can't even remember when i realized i was addicted, and i think its that way for a lot of people. either that or they didn't realize they were addicted until they were forced to get treatment.

I've been addicted to benzos so I know how hard physical addiction is, but I still draw the line when I'm thinking "Fuck I don't have any ___ today's gonna suck shit". Even if it's just weed.

That's how klonopin was for me when I was addicted to it. I had a terribly inept psychiatrist(plus me not giving a shit and just taking any drugs that came my way) that got me up to 12 mg/day of klonopin, and I had to keep taking it or else I'd go into some really terrible withdrawal within a couple day of not taking it. Thank fucking christ I tapered off and am not dependent on that shit anymore.
