When and where did "rave style dancing" first originate?

By "rave style dancing" I mean dancing to techno music with no partner, often using both the hands and feet. A video of what I'm talking about, in case you don't know, can be found on youtube under a search for "Sasha Mongoose Official Video."

So yeah, basically the title sums up my question. Was it from the British Summer of Love circa 1988, or is that how people danced to disco in the 70s, or does it come from gay culture somewhere? Thanks.

Not where I'm from, the rave music stopped at the mason dixon line and turned into the sound of a gate closing then got real quiet..
