Been kickboxing the last 2 and a half years, started training proper Muay Thai at a legit gym in December last year. Can do so many ring styles there :D boxing, BJJ, kyokushin... wish they did Krav Maga. Love kickboxing in the ring cos it's my comfort zone but been working a lot more with the clinch (fun!) and elbows since I started training here as they have a grading system based on technique and it's all part of the prerequisite. Anyway, I favour MT cos it covers pretty much every range excluding the ground and almost every kind of strike possible. And I'm not really into all the formal old school Karate traditions or Gis, I just wanna rock up bow in and hit shit/spar. Any input?

you realise that in traditional martial arts , the practice of external and and internal expressions of the disciplines, so kata, or tai chi, yoga and such excersises are part of the whole?

Traditional Ju-Jitsu: highly disciplined, varied between blocks, strikes and grapples, focuses much more on defense than most MA's and with an excellent extension into weapons training.

Exactly.

No offense to the OP, but I can NOT stand redundant questions like this. Coming from a true mixed martial artist, asking a martial arts practitioner which martial art style they favor would be like asking someone which eyeball they favor. Both of your eyes are equally important, they both make up the WHOLE of human sight and vision, BOTH are equally necessary to see, perceive and discern accurately/precisely. Without one, your vision as a whole is less effective. This is also true when it comes to martial arts. Without one style, your fighting skills by and large are less effective.

I see guys that" favor" and or only want to learn Muay Thai (or just any one specific form of combat) coming into my local MMA gym all the time. The first thing my instructor does, is put these people on their backs. "So you wanna learn Muay Thai eh"? "You're gonna have to earn that right by beating me in Jujitsu first".

It usually goes something like this. (This is only a WHITE BELT by the way)

Standing Game is virtually NOTHING without proper ground game defense and VICE VERSA. So you can throw some good punches and good kicks, so what? What good are kicks and punches going to do you if your being rear naked choked or your arm is about to broken in an arm bar? Please, try not to misinterpret me, by no means am I discrediting "standing game" or Muay Thai/KickBoxing/Boxing, I'm just expressing the importance of Martial arts as a WHOLE and that single styles/techniques by themselves are incomplete/inadequate.

Unless of course you're someone that just wants to learn some basic self defense tactics, then by all means pursue whichever style/technique your heart desires. Or your someone that just wants to pursue a career in Kick Boxing and or Boxing, then by all means pursue it! Make that money!

If however you are serious about learning martial arts and your goal is to become the best fighter you can be in all aspects, then you need to dedicate yourself equally to ALL disciplines, external and internal alike. I digress.

All styles(coupled with innovation) are my favorites. (why) Because all styles are important to me and are needed to meet my particular goals as a fighter.

I myself have taken 3 forms of kung fu, kempo karate, tai chi and kick boxing.....

In terms of martial ART, I like Wing Chung Kung Fu (this is the one bruce lee learned as a child, you practice with the beautiful wooden dummy, with the arms coming out) and tai chi.... these are very artistic and more based on style than they are for actual combat.... tai chi, is probably the best low impact exersize the body can do, and its beautiful ....

Kickboxing is good if you want to kick someones ass, combine that with brazillian ju juitsu , and you will be ready for a bar fight... but in terms of style and grace, not much going on... learn tai chi

I used to train MMA (JKD) although always just for fun, never intense or anything. Had to stop doing it for health reasons a few years back.

Anyway, I really liked Indonesian Pentjak Silat. The body control, the leverage and the very defensive way in was taught. If I was to actually be in a fight, I would based on what I have learned, want to be able to use Pentjak Silat but also kind of use something like Muay Thai mixed in with it, for the more offensive stuff plus the elboes and stuff.

If were to be actually attacked in the street and was able to keep my wits about me, and could not get away, I would probably result to Muay Thai elboes and some Silat trips or takedowns. Not that I am in shape to fight, just pondering.

I agree with motiv311 in that regard, a good attacking method then something "You like to keep for close encounters".

One if the instructors I saw though said a few times, never go for the fancy flying kicks (those who can do them) in a street fight. Quick strikes and get out, unless women are watching you then flying kick to the face.

I'm gonna steer this in a different direction because I'm not really a fighter, I just like to hit bags, but when it comes to watching fights, holy shit do I love watching a good capoeira fight/knockout reel.

Some of the things they pull off is nothing short of amazing, and the knockouts are fucking brutal.

like, for example....
