What's your favorite sport to watch vs. your favorite to play

I fucking love Test match cricket. 5 days of battle with so many factors to consider. The pitch alone is magical. Depending on where in the world you play will change the type of players you select. It can range from a dry, flat, dusty pitch of the Subcontinent which has little bounce allowing the spin bowlers to grip and turn, to the hard baked pitches of western Australia where the fast bowlers reign supreme and threaten to take a batsmen's head off. Early morning moisture and overcast condition can cause the ball to swing and move about. As the days roll by and the summer sun bakes the pitch, cracks begin to open up creating an ideal target for the bowlers to aim for. The same goes for the foot marks that the fast bowlers dig into the surface by day 4 and 5 giving the spin bowlers a surface for the ball to grip and turn at 90 degrees. Played all around the World, conditions from almost every continent are so unique that any new Test series is like a completely fresh contest.

Then you have the ball. New it is a rock hard leather cherry with strong stitching that gives you bounce and comes of the bat like a rocket. As the overs come and go, the bowlers slowly polish one side creating a smooth surface that slips through the air causing the ball to swing. By the end it is a soft, worn construction of human sweat and spit that is difficult to swing but suddenly can defy the laws of physics and reverse swing due to the uneven weight created by working at the ball all day in the field.

Baseball's biggest worry is whether or not you spit your tobacco before you go out to bat or if that rough spot on the side of your tongue is cancer or not. It says a lot about a sport when you can still find it entertaining listening to the coverage on a radio.

Sailing isn't exactly a spectator sport but the thrill of leaning over the edge of your craft as you wrestle the wind and race across the open water is better than any game played on grass. I do like to follow epic races like the Volvo Around the World or The Americas Cup though, particularly now days with GPS tracking on the internet. Tactics and pure physical endurance in the true wilderness is fucking epic

the one sport England plays that I actually do think is interesting is Polo.

reminds me of ice hockey but with horses instead of skates

granted I know nothing about it

You have to be really rich to play polo. You need to have a horse, and also have a load of friends who have horses, and this isn't the vast American West, it's tiny England, it's a very exclusive game for very privileged people.

Yes Busty, you know how it goes, there's just such a depth to Test cricket that I think is unrivalled by any other sport.

The shear length of the game also makes it a great spectator sport. You can leave your seat, have a piss and a sneaky bump of cocaine, grab a round of beers for your mates and casually stroll back to your seat and the most you may have missed is a boundry or wicket. Not to mention the lunch and tea breaks, which when played at my local home ground of the Gabbba means a dash across Vulture St and two pints at the German Club before settling in your seat for the final session of play.

I also love how at the end of 5 days you need to take twenty wickets for victory. It doesn't matter that you are leading by 400 runs and your opposition has only a single wicket remaining, if they hold on until stumps it is still a draw. It is the ultimate prick tease. Every Test ground is a unique experience from the gentile surrounds of Lords in London, to the crowded cage of Wankhede stadium in Mumbai to the seething steel drums and dreadlocks of Sabina Park in Jamaica.

The only competitive sport I find entertaining to watch is american football. Baseball is fun to play but extremely boring to watch. Favorite sports to "play" are surfing and snowboarding.

If thats what you think baseball is all about then you know as much about it as I do with cricket.

Though ill be the first to admit theres a lot of crotch adjusting and tobaccy in baseball

American Football and Drum Corps are my favorite sports to watch. Favorite to play would be pool, bumper pool especially.

Watching - College Football & Premiership and Bundesliga Football( Soccer)
Playing - None anymore but a bit of Golf back in the day

hitting a fastball is only hard if you are not a good hitter

i was, and still am a good hitter and back in high school used to fucking light up the hard throwers in our league

i remember my junior year we played a team that had a pitcher who threw gas
(he was drafted but ended up going to volunteer state jr college in tenn or some shit)

the kid struck out every kid on my team, every time they went to the plate

i was 2-2 with 2 line drive doubles hit in the gap, i think both were on the first pitch

i was fucking pissed after the game, we were having a decent season for once, this was a pretty big game and nobody showed up to play

amyway i enjoy most sports except track and field type bullshit and ones that involve a net and goalie

I love watching soccer (AEK) and NASCAR (dont fuck with the 14). I sometimes will get fanatical and break the tv. Risk increases exponentially when im drunk.

I love playing soccer, mini golf, golf (when your drunk and you race the golf carts around), shooting hoops, i guess thats it. Oh yes and weightlifting! Not a bodybuilder but i hit the gym at least 4 times a week (its not a sport but its exercise)

watch: football, baseball, ncaa basketball (you too would hate the NBA if you lived in this market)
play: hockey

watched the last 5 seconds of spurs/thunder tonight

all games need to end like that

the most fun/anxious season of all time for me was the 2010 university of minnesota basketball team, mainly just cause i got to watch nearly every game(for the first time) and along side my roommate atthe time, talking about a kid i befriended all the way back in pre-k, we've been close since, and he's also a gopher sports fan
i give the dude credit he still keeps up with both bball and football, probably more than i do, and he has way more of an active lifestyle
it keeps us connected so i'm cool with it
pretty sure he started liking them cause we were friends and he needed a team and hated penn state and notre dame like any reasonable person should

2003-2006 u of minnesota football was always fun, there was no such thing as a simple loss, either an extreme meltdown('03 vs mich, '05 vs wisconsin) or beatdown

'03-'04 the marion barber/laurence maroney running combo(first duo to ever run for consecutive 1000+ yard seasons) was crazy awesome, nobody will have a running game like that again(thanks o-line)
In 2003 Maroney and Barber combined for 2,317 rushing yards; in 2004 they increased that total to 2,617.
it's too bad during the years of offensive explosiveness, running 300+ yards nearly every game, they had a defense comparable to '12 WVU

My favorite sport to both play and watch is college lacrosse. I started playing lacrosse at age 12, played in a middle school league, summer leagues, and all 4 years of high school (1 year JV, 3 years Varsity). Super fast paced, hard hitting, and extremely fun. While I was not the best, nothing else was more fun than being on that field on Friday nights, regardless of the weather. I love watching it on TV, and I have been to plenty of games. I'm more fond of college lacrosse versus professional because college to me seems a lot more competitive. Professional lacrosse on TV just is not fun to watch, it looks like they are not even trying.

My second favorite sport to watch (riiiight up there with lacrosse) is college basketball. Nothing in sports comes close to the excitement of March Madness. I believe it is more interesting to watch because they have a shorter season (than the NBA), so they seem to play harder every game, while in the pros it seems like play does not get competitive until towards the end of the season/playoffs.

In third place as far as watching goes, is hockey. Been to a couple NHL games, and they are so much fun - even better than watching it on TV. The speed of the game is just insane. If you have the opportunity to go to a hockey game in your life, I'd highly suggest it! =D
