I fucking love Test match cricket. 5 days of battle with so many factors to consider. The pitch alone is magical. Depending on where in the world you play will change the type of players you select. It can range from a dry, flat, dusty pitch of the Subcontinent which has little bounce allowing the spin bowlers to grip and turn, to the hard baked pitches of western Australia where the fast bowlers reign supreme and threaten to take a batsmen's head off. Early morning moisture and overcast condition can cause the ball to swing and move about. As the days roll by and the summer sun bakes the pitch, cracks begin to open up creating an ideal target for the bowlers to aim for. The same goes for the foot marks that the fast bowlers dig into the surface by day 4 and 5 giving the spin bowlers a surface for the ball to grip and turn at 90 degrees. Played all around the World, conditions from almost every continent are so unique that any new Test series is like a completely fresh contest.
Then you have the ball. New it is a rock hard leather cherry with strong stitching that gives you bounce and comes of the bat like a rocket. As the overs come and go, the bowlers slowly polish one side creating a smooth surface that slips through the air causing the ball to swing. By the end it is a soft, worn construction of human sweat and spit that is difficult to swing but suddenly can defy the laws of physics and reverse swing due to the uneven weight created by working at the ball all day in the field.
Baseball's biggest worry is whether or not you spit your tobacco before you go out to bat or if that rough spot on the side of your tongue is cancer or not. It says a lot about a sport when you can still find it entertaining listening to the coverage on a radio.
Sailing isn't exactly a spectator sport but the thrill of leaning over the edge of your craft as you wrestle the wind and race across the open water is better than any game played on grass. I do like to follow epic races like the Volvo Around the World or The Americas Cup though, particularly now days with GPS tracking on the internet. Tactics and pure physical endurance in the true wilderness is fucking epic
