What's this even mean...? study on ecstasy

A lot of gen-xers are getting into their latter years, people who used this drug when we knew even less about it than we do today, and there hasn't been a huge blow up of ecstasy related health concerns in recent memory. Studies are just that - studies. They aren't proving anything, not yet at least, and what we do know about the long term effects of ecstasy on the body are really just general statements, like "taking more of it has a worse effect on you." Don't get anxious when reading scientific papers, just use your brain.

I think studies like this need to be put into context. Cigarette smoking is very harmful to your health but it's not illegal. Excessive alcohol use can be very harmful. Moderation is the key. None of us live forever and about a third of us will end up with alzheimers anyway. No reason for panic.

i participated in a study measuring people who use drugs vs those who dont. they tested mostly your memory and you got an MRI screening and pics of your brain (very cool!). I have not seen the results yet, but i am eager to.

sometimes i wonder why i signed up for this forum

it gives a lot of knowledge on harm reduction, then i read posts like this and i have little thoughts like "AMG i rolled this weekend, and i rolled two weeks ago, and a month before that, so now im all fucked up, this headache? must be related to the overuse i did recently... AHHHHH!"

fuck that, the human brain and many organs are EXTREMELY regenerative.

think healthy thoughts and you'll probably be healthier than the person sitting there thinking about their brain rotting

worrying is a way of creating something you dont want

ya I know, the body is very regenerative and is powerful. I'm not worrying or even really thinking this is much of a deterrent to not use. Like I will still use the same, I was just curious about the study really..

well its always good to know, and at the same time i feel like this crap just sends me into worry mode which i dont need after overdoing it lately :P

id say this site has helped in regards to learning how to pre post load, take care of myself before, during, and after a roll, and learning to space (although we dont always follow it)

because i have such easy access to pills and i love the feeling to the point that without knowing the facts (like most people) for sure i would have rolled almost every weekend.

I looked up the full text of this study ... a few things I noticed.

First off, the sample was 20(!) former MDMA users (abstinent for a year) and a control group of 20 non-users. This is a very small sample size (which is unfortunately kind of necessary, given the amount of effort and resources necessary to run an fMRI study). So it's unclear whether or not enough information has been gathered to generalize this data.

Thirdly, the upper end of MDMA usage on this study was pretty high. The subject who had rolled the most had reportedly rolled 155 times, with a reported lifetime intake of 10 grams (which seems low for 155 rolling episodes, but whatever). The average was 33 reported lifetime uses, and about 2.6g reported lifetime intake. With no way of knowing how often they rolled, we have no way of generalizing this data with spacing out rolls, redosing, etc in mind. It's possible (although improbable) that one of the people had only eaten 1g in their entire life but did it all over the course of a week on consecutive days, which would obviously do a LOT more damage than eating 2-3g over the course of a few years, with 30-60+ day breaks in between. Basically, this information isn't enough to generalize with regards to recreational use, aside from simply saying that your risk goes up as you do more.

Finally, looking at the results ...

This is a pretty loose correlation.

as a researcher in the field of neurodegeneration, i'd even say that this is no correlation; you can draw pretty much any graph inside there. deducing pretty much any conclusion from these data is dubious. such results can point into a direction, but prove nothing and absolutely need to be confirmed by further studies to be of any value.

Uh huh, it is quite the plug hole.

All the same, one of my parents friends does Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy and apparently I can get some free sessions. I was wondering the efficany of those. I've read alot regarding HBOT and axonal resprouting, along with increased cell repair.. And remember our serotogenic cells aren't dead, just plucked of their axons.

I've also read it's used to treat parkinsons ideas, autism and whole lot of other things.

First of all very high doses have been shown to cause cell death of whole serotonin neurons, its just much more likely that they become exclusively pruned and not destroyed.

Second of all there is only 1 commercially available supplement with any decent evidence behind it for neurogenesis and brain regeneration.

That being curcumin. So if your not taking a high quality brand your folly. It will do more good than all the other crap combined, only exercise comes close to its regenerative powers.

Hyperbaric chambers look like a gimmick to me, i dont see good clear results from the literature.

I think EPO shows more promise in neuroregneration.

Best stack currently available would be curcumin/n-acetycysteine/omega 3 fish oil with exercise thrown in there.

I second Bben's motion - tumeric is among the most incredible of all herbs!

You can buy tumeric extract which is 95% curcuminoids.
If you take black pepper at the same time, you will DRASTICALLY increase the bio-availability.

Tumeric is the primary spice used in curry.
It has been used in India and China extensively. New research suggests that tumeric may play a profound role in lowering the rates of cancer and Alzheimer's disease!

It is a powerful anti-inflammatory and thus may fight the normal process of cognitive decline seen with aging. Some say it even helps to increase BDNF in the brain. Brain Derived Neutrophic Factor is a protein that stimulates the release of stem cells!

You know what else does this effectively?
Exercise.

Good job, Bben.

Yeah, a sample size of 20 people is just not going to turn up anything particularly significant in the first place.
