what's the use by date?

I have a query...
: what is the average shelflife of pills? I have been told that if left too long they can be badly affected due to moisture and heat. Do pills go yukky and crumbly when they are old or is that just thwe way some are?
...
Also are there any particular tricks or handy hints for HOW or WHAT to store them in???
