Yeah, methionine (and cysteine) are metabolic precursors of glutathione, and the liver combines glutathione with the paracetamol metabolite in order to stop it being toxic. Thing is, the liver has a limited supply of glutathione, so anything over 4g depletes the liver. The above sulphur containing amino acids act as an immediate source for glutathione production.
One thing though, methionine only has a full antidote effect if taken within a few hours of the paracetamol (it's a longer metabolic route to glutathione from methionine than from cysteine), after that, acetylcysteine is the preferred treatment by A&E depts (it's also given IV for an even more rapid effect).
If you've had the troble you've mentioned in the past re people and paracetamol, it's not a bad idea to have some methionine in the house; I believe it's something like 300mg of methionine for every gram of paracetamol over 4g, but I'll ask my other half when she gets in from work (paracetamol OD's are the most common enquiry poisons units have to deal with, so she can recite the figures in her sleep)
if you want easy to get codeine (no need for extraction) look into nurofen plus
If you've got any sort of troble with your stomach, or are taking steroids (corticosteroids mainly), the ibuprofen in nurofen can make your stomach bleed like a stuck pig, so you have to be careful with them as well
