whats the last line of insomnia treatment?

i highly doubt my doc will give me Xyrem. theres probably a better chance of him giving me seconal than ghb.

If your expecting barbiturates, sorry you won't get any prescribed. I have severe insomnia and have been prescribed nearly everything but never given the permission of a barbiturate. If anything, you may get some phenobarbital but that would be a big surprise but just like benzodiazepines, in the long run it makes your insomnia worse. Seroquel or any other anti-psychotics are the most potent drugs for sleep. I'm surprised you haven't been prescribed it yet, doctors love to these days for insomnia although its really not supposed to be prescribed for that unless you have a mental disorder like bipolar or schizo also.

Just wanted to add that my family doctor told me that prescribing an antipsychotic for insomnia to an individual who does not suffer a mental condition that warrants an antipsychotic can be considered unethical (and I agree).

maybe a strong hypnotic benzo, such as triazolam or flunitrazepam.......I would recommend trazodone, but you say that you are very sensitive to antidepressants so idk

i am sensitive to antidepressants, so that is not an option.

Are you sensitive to ALL anti-depressants, because they're not all the same. Its the newer ones that cause people problems imo.

I went down the benzo/zopiclone etc road, & like everyone is saying, they work great for a bit, then they just stop working at all, tolerance builds up with those drugs very quickly, and when you stop you get a horrible backlash including insomnia thats far worse than it was in the first place.

Anyway, I reluctantly) went onto an anti-depressant called Dosulepin, which my doc prescribed when the zopiclone stopped working a while back. But what a surprise I got....the stuff knocks me out better than any of the benzo's/Z drugs ever did.

Its one of the older 'try-cyclic' AD's, & has sedative plus painkilling properties, doctors usually only prescribe it as a last resort, to people like you (& me) when all other options have been tried.

Google it up, & speak to your doctor....it may just do the trick & you may find you aren't overly sensitive to it at all. It works a treat for me anyway.
;)Regards, Levvy

alcohol works but it too has multiple troubles associated with it. In my opinion though it is less harmful than many sleep meds out there.

Moderate use of alcohol (1 to 2 beers per day) may be beneficial but (studies show) heavy drinking is worse for you than any prescription drug used on or off label for insomnia.

Youll probably get something like Seroquel or anti-psychotics, then strong sedating benzos like Triazolam and Temezepam. Then there still is barbs but almost no doctor will prescribe them ever, theres like 10 people in the whole us with a script to seconal.

Trouble is, I brought my psych doctor all the meds (mostly for acid reflux, IBS and roxy 15) he hit the roof when he saw the opiates. Put me on suboxone which I didn't have a problem with. Back then I had insurance and could afford it. But would give nothing to help me sleep, besides seroquel. I had so many bad side effects from it. He's like many doctors who doesn't want to prescribe benzos with opiates. I never abused or ran out early either with ativan or xanax. So I'm thinking about seeing my old pm doctor whose pretty conservative but at least would give me valium. I have no insurance and they only take cash anyway...

doctors really need to stop using seroquel for insomnia. it really isn't that much safer than benzos(seroquel and other antipsychotics can cause physical dependence).

seroquel has a LONG list if dangerous side effects, both short term and long term. they should keep it for people who actually need it(their mental condition being worse than the side effects).

^ As I said before guys, tell them in their faces if they want to Rx you Seroquel or any other antipsychotic for sleep: This is unethical. I don't need antipsychotics. I don't suffer from a mental condition which warrants the use of an antipsychotic. Also, I'd rather not gain a ton of weight and also put myself at higher risk for type 2 diabetes.

Also, I take 230mg of methadone daily with 0.5mg of Xanax 3x a day. Each med is prescribed to me by a different doctor, but each doctor knows that I'm taking both medications. If your doctor is freaking out at the thought of combining an opiate with a benzo, you're probably not gonna change his views on it, I'd try to find a different doctor.

P.S. The combo that I take is very risky even in my opinion, but I've been on Xanax since November 2005 so I'm tolerant to it, and I'm also tolerant to the methadone (I don't feel anything when I take it).

Nitrazepam is an exellent benzo 4 sleeping although it does have a long half life and can make you still fel it in the morning , which i personally like . Like has been mentioned b4 u will still end up with a tolerance no matter what drug so go carefull mate.

That's weird. My psychiatrist knows about what my pain dr prescribes and vise versa and I get no problem. I Get 20mg diazepam a day, 2mg of Klonopin a day, then I get 2 20mg of Opana a day and 5 15mg roxicodone a day. They know about it and it's fine. I do actually have issues with insomnia (benzo's don't make me tired at all)), my shrink will only give trazedone for that... I don't take it as it gives me nightmares. But atleast I get my benzos and pain meds.

Nitrazepam is quite close to clonazepam, IMHO (both are nitrobenzodiazepines).

Anything beyond one drink is destructive to sleep cycles, plus it's a highly addictive and abused drug. I don't think it's necessarily less harmful than any of the drugs discussed so far.

IMO alcohol is a sleep aid but a terrible one at that. If you haven't tried seroquel, give it a go. It's a rather 'mild' sedative antipsychotic. I haven't tried it but I hear it's usually More effective than ambien, benadryl, and benzos.

Well its obvious you haven't tried Seroquel. Seroquel is far from mild. Most potent atypical antipsychotic. I wouldn't really call it sedating either, it just knocks you out.
